WASHINGTON\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Sen. Mitch McConnell on Sunday revealed for the first time that a fall led to his hospitalization, breaking the silence about his condition after weeks of speculation about the Kentucky Republican\u2019s health.<\/p>\n
McConnell, 84, said in a statement that he has undergone a battery of tests as doctors try to determine what led to his fall. He explained the long silence about his condition by saying that \u201cfolks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEven in the public eye, I feel that same instinct \u2014 I can\u2019t help it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
McConnell said he is now in a rehabilitation center and will not be returning to the Senate \u201cquite yet.\u201d He said he continues to work with his staff on Senate business in the meantime.<\/p>\n
McConnell had provided little information since his hospitalization June 14, his office saying only that he was \u201creceiving excellent care\u201d and recovering. Speculation about his condition became so intense that Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, took the extraordinary step of asking that McConnell update the public about his health in a \u201ctransparent manner.\u201d<\/p>\n
McConnell is retiring at the end of his term in January after one of the most consequential careers in modern politics. He was the longest-tenured Senate party leader in U.S. history before leaving that role last year.<\/p>\n
Republicans have nominated U.S. Rep. Andy Barr to replace him, while Democrats have nominated former state lawmaker Charles Booker.<\/p>\n
A history of health problems<\/p>\n
McConnell had polio in his early childhood and has long acknowledged some difficulty as an adult in walking and climbing stairs.<\/p>\n
The physician\u2019s office in Congress said in the statement Sunday that McConnell has \u201cexperienced several falls through the year\u201d due to his \u201cpost-polio condition.\u201d The office said his physical therapy is aimed at reducing the risk of falling again.<\/p>\n
\u201cA comprehensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team determined that he had no fractures, cardiac abnormalities, stroke, tumor, or hemorrhage,\u201d the physician\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n
McConnell was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and was the Republican leader from 2007 until January 2025, serving as both majority and minority leader. He has remained active as a rank-and-file senator, showing up for work when the chamber is in session, often using a wheelchair to get around.<\/p>\n
But the senator\u2019s physical condition has visibly declined in recent years.<\/p>\n
He was hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 and missed several weeks of work after falling in a Washington hotel. He twice froze up during news conferences after he returned, staring vacantly ahead while surrounded by reporters, colleagues and staff. A year later, he fell and sprained his wrist while walking out of a GOP luncheon.<\/p>\n
