And the hometown hero did it in front of a sold-out crowd by bringing some of his famous friends along for the monumental night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHow did this happen?\u201d asked a bearded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/david-letterman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-letterman_1\" data-tag=\"david-letterman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Letterman<\/a> as he took center stage to wild cheers and applause. \u201cWhat, are the Beatles here tonight, ladies and gentlemen? This makes that Taylor Swift wedding look like a student film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLetterman wasn\u2019t the only surprise Mulaney had in his back pocket for the Mister Whatever tour stop. He invited Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy as an opener, and the 89-year-old played a short set while audience members took their seats. Guy is currently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buddyguy.net\/#tour\" target=\"_blank\">on tour himself <\/a>with stops this month in Toronto, New York, Michigan, Kansas and Missouri. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/richard-kind\/\" id=\"auto-tag_richard-kind_1\" data-tag=\"richard-kind\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Kind<\/a>, Mulaney\u2019s longtime good friend and sidekick on the Netflix live variety talk show Everybody\u2019s Live With John Mulaney, acted as the night\u2019s emcee and appeared on stage with a \u201cMayor\u201d sash. Kind welcomed Mulaney\u2019s pal and former Saturday Night Live colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/fred-armisen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fred-armisen_1\" data-tag=\"fred-armisen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Armisen<\/a>, who performed a comedy set that featured some musical numbers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThen came Letterman who had the task of welcoming Mulaney to the stage. The two had spent some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/david-letterman-netflix-john-mulaney-paul-shaffer-live-show-1236588416\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quality time together<\/a> recently as Mulaney appeared as a guest at Letterman\u2019s May show at Hollywood\u2019s Montalban Theatre as part of the Netflix is a Joke Festival. Before that, Letterman had also appeared on Mulaney\u2019s Everybody\u2019s Live. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMulaney delivered a well-received and lengthy set \u2014 he \u201cblew the non-existent roof off Wrigley Field,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Ethan_Anderton\/status\/2076331048170856620\" target=\"_blank\">praised<\/a> Slash Film\u2019s Ethan Anderton \u2014\u00a0that featured anecdotes about his life with wife Olivia Munn and their two children, Malcolm and Mei, and the beauty of their family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor months ahead of the performance, Mulaney had been teasing the stop. \u201cI\u2019m very unabashedly excited about it,\u201d he told Jimmy Kimmel during a stop on his late night talk show. He also joked to Jenna Bush Hager and guest host Matt Rogers during a Today show stop that \u201cif the wind is right in Wrigleyville,\u201d the sound from the show will carry to surrounding streets. And per a video shared on TikTok, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@kingofthehillqueen\/video\/7661780235578248478?q=john%20mulaney%20wrigley&amp;t=1783919539977\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he was right.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhen it was all said and done, Mulaney seemed floored by the scene. \u201cEvery Chicago thing in me tells me to stop bowing, but I\u2019m going to enjoy the moment,\u201d he said as he closed the show. \u201cThank you very much for being with us tonight. Another round of applause please for Fred Armisen, Buddy Guy, Richard Kind and Ball State\u2019s David Letterman.
