ALLENTOWN, Pa.- Thomas Jefferson University announced it will build a four-year regional campus of its medical college in Allentown to expand healthcare access and education.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“More physicians trained right here who will spend their careers caring in this community,” said Dr. Joseph Cacchione, Jefferson Chief Executive Officer.<\/p>\n

The Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) is located at One Center Square in downtown Allentown and will include more than 54,000 square feet of newly constructed space, the university said in a news release.\u00a0This comes two years after Jefferson Health and Lehigh Valley Health Network merged.<\/p>\n

“What connects all of this is really a simple strategy — build academic programs where the workforce need is the greatest and build them in true partnership with the communities that are already on the ground,” said Dr. Susan Aldridge, president of Thomas Jefferson University.<\/p>\n

The same curriculum will be offered at SKMC\u2019s Philadelphia campus, according to the release.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The inaugural class will contain 45 students and begin in July 2029, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Clinical training will be featured at Jefferson Health hospitals in the region and other locations, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“People who spend formative years of their lives here who came to know this community not as an assignment, but as home,” said Dr. Said Ibrahim, Dean of Sidney Kimmel Medical College.<\/p>\n

“This medical school will be an academic gem both in the state of Pennsylvania and nationally,” said Dr. Brian Nester, Jefferson chief operating officer.<\/p>\n

State Representative Mike Schlossberg said $2.15 million in state funding is coming in each year to go to the medical school. He said it will subsidize the cost of tuition, medical research and equipment purchases.<\/p>\n

“This also means more doctors downtown, more people in the heart of our city, shopping in our stores, eating in our restaurants, paying tax dollars to support our teachers, police officers and firefighters and participate in Allentown’s growing and thriving economy,” said Representative Schlossberg.<\/p>\n

“It’s a commitment to workforce, it’s a commitment to the economic development of the City of Allentown and it’s an extension of a phenomenal partnership,” said Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk.<\/p>\n

In addition to the expansion of its medical college, in May 2026 Thomas Jefferson University announced plans to expand other academic programs across the Lehigh Valley.<\/p>\n
