It argued that local laws run counter<\/a> to federal laws by restricting \u201clocal governments from sharing immigration information with federal law enforcement officials\u201d and preventing immigration agents from identifying \u201cindividuals who may be subject to removal.\u201d<\/p>\n Judge Lindsay Jenkins of the Northern District of Illinois granted the defendants’ motion for dismissal.<\/p>\n Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said he was pleased with the decision and the city is safer when police focus on the needs of Chicagoans.<\/p>\n \u201cThis ruling affirms what we have long known: that Chicago\u2019s Welcoming City Ordinance is lawful and supports public safety. JB Pritzker welcomed the ruling, saying in a social media post, \u201cIllinois just beat the Trump Administration in federal court.\u201d<\/p>\n The Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security and did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.<\/p>\n The administration has filed a series of lawsuits<\/a> targeting state or city policies seen as interfering with immigration enforcement, including those in Los Angeles<\/a>, New York City<\/a>, Denver<\/a> and Rochester, New York<\/a>. It sued four New Jersey cities<\/a> in May.<\/p>\n Heavily Democratic Chicago has been a sanctuary city for decades and has beefed up its laws several times, including during Trump\u2019s first term<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n That same year, then-Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, signed more statewide sanctuary protections into law<\/a>, putting him at odds with his party.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
