{"id":93407,"date":"2025-07-26T06:32:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T06:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/93407\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T06:32:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T06:32:09","slug":"proposed-wastewater-treatment-plant-could-make-san-antonios-water-undrinkable-scientist-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/93407\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed wastewater treatment plant could make San Antonio\u2019s water undrinkable, scientist says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>BEXAR COUNTY, Texas<\/strong> \u2013 Across the state, there are dozens of wastewater treatment facilities like the one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/02\/07\/residents-near-trinity-aquifer-warn-of-pollution-ecological-impact-amid-proposed-wastewater-plant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/02\/07\/residents-near-trinity-aquifer-warn-of-pollution-ecological-impact-amid-proposed-wastewater-plant\/\">proposed in northwest Bexar County<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But building it on the Guajolote Ranch site that sits on the Helotes Creek watershed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/06\/18\/san-antonios-drinking-water-at-risk-if-guajolote-ranch-development-is-built-expert-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/06\/18\/san-antonios-drinking-water-at-risk-if-guajolote-ranch-development-is-built-expert-says\/\">could make San Antonio\u2019s water unsafe to drink<\/a>, researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThat wastewater treatment process does not purify the water to the point where it supports human consumption,\u201d said Stuart Birnbaum, Emirates Associate Professor of Planetary Earth and Sciences at University of Texas San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The plant is still awaiting approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, but northwest Bexar County residents are trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/05\/20\/judges-recommend-tceq-approval-of-wastewater-permit-for-controversial-guajolote-ranch-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/05\/20\/judges-recommend-tceq-approval-of-wastewater-permit-for-controversial-guajolote-ranch-development\/\">spread the word about the damage that could be caused by the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The treatment facility is part of a larger 2,900-home project, Guajolote Ranch, being built by the Lennar Corporation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In order for water to be safe to drink, Birnbaum said the treatment process must be perfect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWater treatment facilities fail a lot,\u201d Birnbaum said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Additionally, he said the chemicals used in the process could be harmful and potentially cause cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While the process is used all over Texas, Birnbaum said the Helotes Creek watershed is extremely delicate due to its unique characteristics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While most aquifers are made of sand or mud, the Trinity and Edwards aquifers are made of limestone. This means the river beds don\u2019t have sand, mud or plants to naturally filter the water and absorb chemicals or pollutants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cLimestone is not going to clean up the water the way sand or sandstone will,\u201d Birnbaum said. \u201cThat means that this contaminated water is constantly, constantly flowing with little to no dilution effect. Again, it just builds up over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Additionally, while scientists can predict where water will flow into most watersheds, Birnbaum said the limestone makes Helotes Creek watershed less predictable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWater\u2019s gonna flow through cracks and fractures and holes,\u201d Birnbaum said, \u201cwhether the hole is pencil width or whether the hole is a cave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">If the water gets contaminated, Birnbaum said it can end up in people\u2019s wells in a matter of days. If the water flows into the Edwards Aquifer, it would contaminate the source for 15% of San Antonio\u2019s drinking water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Randy Neumann, a northwest Bexar County resident who has done extensive research on the subject, said the state commission needs to have separate regulations for different types of aquifers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cTCEQ has one rule, Neumann said. \u201cThey don\u2019t differentiate between a soil river and a half-pipe made of limestone. They apply the same generic rule to every river in Texas, and so those rules really are inadequate for this application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">State administrative law judges recommended the commission to approve the wastewater permit for the Guajolote Ranch development in May. Their decision is not final, however, and could lead to further legal battles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The matter is being reviewed by the commission, according to the Scenic Loop-Helotes Creek Alliance, which may extend into August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KSAT has emailed and called the Lennar Corporation multiple times requesting an interview or statement regarding the issues that researchers and residents have brought up about the potential harmful impacts to the area.
