{"id":934121,"date":"2026-07-14T11:01:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T11:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/934121\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T11:01:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T11:01:15","slug":"an-18-city-council-pay-hike-is-a-middle-finger-to-nyc-voters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/934121\/","title":{"rendered":"An 18% City Council pay hike is a middle finger to NYC voters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a move obscene on so many levels: Members of the City Council are looking to vote themselves a fat pay hike.<\/p>\n<p>Just days after they approved a gargantuan $126 billion city budget, they took up a measure to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/07\/us-news\/nyc-council-members-want-to-give-themselves-18-2-pay-hike-and-set-automatic-increases-every-year-after\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boost their salaries more than 18%<\/a> retroactive to Jan. 1 \u2014 plus automatic 2% hikes every year thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>The hikes would push members\u2019 pay to $175,500, upper middle-class income territory and more than twice the city\u2019s median income ($81,228).<\/p>\n<p>So the move shows complete contempt for city voters, who the pols plainly think won\u2019t notice, as well as for the City Charter, which sets out an entirely different procedure for upping their pay.<\/p>\n<p>Shame on Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Speaker Julie Menin if they let this happen, rather than annoy the members angling for the windfall.<\/p>\n<p>And shame on the supposed good-government groups currying favor by claiming a $27,000 increase will attract superior candidates.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>Hah!
