Houston<\/strong> \u2013 Houston photographer Violeta \u00c1lvarez<\/a> whose work has appeared in major publications including Rolling Stone and Variety is inviting the community to step inside her newest exhibition, \u201cCasa de Cultura,\u201d and help build it in real time.<\/p>\n

The project centers on preserving immigrant heritage and cultural memory at a moment when immigration is once again at the center of a tense national debate. But \u00c1lvarez\u2019s approach is personal, visual and participatory. She\u2019s asking people to bring forward the kinds of family photographs and stories that too often sit tucked away in binders, boxes or suitcases, unseen for years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is dedicated to my mother \u2026 for her journey that came over here,\u201d \u00c1lvarez said during her interview on Houston Life, adding that she also wants to honor anyone impacted by immigration policy.<\/p>\n

\u00c1lvarez shared the origin story behind both her career and the the exhibition. Her mother immigrated from Mexico in the 1960s, worked as a housekeeper in River Oaks area and saved up to buy a camera. Her mother also took photos herself, \u00c1lvarez said, and eventually gifted her a camera an early spark that shaped everything that came next.<\/p>\n

Houston Life\u2019s Derrick Shore says \u00c1lvarez\u2019s story reflects the \u201cAmerican dream\u201d of an immigrant parent\u2019s sacrifice in building the runway for their child\u2019s future. \u00c1lvarez credited her mother with pushing her to keep going.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt one point \u2026 when I was living in New York, I\u2019m like, \u2018Maybe I should be cleaning houses,\u2019\u201d \u00c1lvarez recalled. \u201cAnd she said, \u2018No. Keep pushing your dream.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00c1lvarez described Casa de Cultura as more than a traditional exhibition. It functions as a community altar and a collective record where visitors can contribute copies of family photos, reflect on loved ones who have died, and share stories tied to culture, identity and memory. They can also write reflections directly on the wall, creating an evolving space shaped by the people who walk through it.<\/p>\n

The show includes \u00c1lvarez\u2019s photography\u2014ranging from music portraits to documentary images alongside installations and community elements. <\/p>\n

During the interview, \u00c1lvarez recounted photographing in Laredo along the Rio Grande, when she later learned her aunt had died that same day. She described the painful reality many immigrant families carry: people leave for a better life, but separation can stretch into decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s something that\u2019s very common in our community,\u201d she said, describing how families can go years\u2014or lifetimes\u2014without seeing relatives again.<\/p>\n

\u00c1lvarez said she wants Casa de Cultura to help \u201chumanize our community,\u201d and to make culture and identity visible in a space where people feel seen.<\/p>\n

\u00c1lvarez encouraged people interested in participating to start pulling out family photos now and think about what stories or reflections they want to share.<\/p>\n

Casa de Cultura is hosted at Fresh Arts Gallery<\/a> at Sawyer Yards. Admission is free and open to the public, and artwork will be available for sale.<\/p>\n
