\u201cThe View\u201d co-host Sunny Hostin stood by her previous comments on Monday, saying that\u00a0she feels \u201cunsafe\u201d\u00a0in neighborhoods with many American flags<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While appearing on the \u201cBehind the Table\u201d podcast<\/a>, Hostin told the show\u2019s executive producer, Brian Teta, \u201cI stand by that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to say what\u2019s interesting is that this is not a new conversation in the Black community,\u201d Hostin said.<\/p>\n

She then recounted a time she visited White friends at a beach house in North Carolina and felt \u201cnervous\u201d after spotting a Confederate flag.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in the South,\u201d Hostin recalled. \u201cI\u2019ve got these two kids with me. I look the way that I look, and I\u2019m walking past a Confederate flag with a group of dudes in a pickup truck<\/a> on the beach. And I scurried back to the house, and I said to the hosts, \u2018Do you know that there\u2019s a Confederate flag out there? You know, it didn\u2019t feel great.\u2019 And they had seen the flag for years, but it didn\u2019t have the same effect on them as it would have on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

During \u201cThe View\u201d last week, while discussing celebrations of America\u2019s 250th anniversary<\/a>, Hostin recalled a previous occasion in 2021 when she said on the show that she feels uncomfortable in neighborhoods with numerous American flags.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said this on this show many, many years ago, because this is my tenth year on the show,\u201d she said. \u201cI said there are times when I walk into a community, and I see American flags all over the community and I suddenly feel unsafe because there\u2019s a section of this country that has co-opted the American flag, and they equate being an American or an American flag with White supremacy, and that should never be the symbol of White supremacy<\/a>, but they have weaponized it.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday\u2019s podcast, she emphasized that she does not have a problem with the American flag on its own but rather when she sees a community with \u201cflags everywhere.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, at this point in our country, the American\u00a0flag has been co-opted by the far right. They call themselves patriots, people that storm the Capitol with Confederate flags and American flags. And they\u2019ve weaponized the American flag. That is something that is happening in this country. And to deny that is ridiculous to me,\u201d Hostin said.<\/p>\n

She also voiced support for liberal efforts to\u00a0\u201creclaim\u201d the American flag.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be very happy to be part of a take the flag back, reclaim the American flag as a symbol of what it should be, which is, I think, justice, which I think is freedom. I think it\u2019s equality. It\u2019s sort of\u2026 the promise of this country,\u201d Hostin said.<\/p>\n

In 2021, Hostin spoke on \u201cThe View\u201d about Black Americans feeling uncomfortable in neighborhoods with American flags,\u00a0defending MSNBC analyst Mara Gay\u00a0for her controversial admission that she found it \u201cdisturbing\u201d to see American flags, Trump flags and signs criticizing then-President Joe Biden in Long Island, New York.<\/p>\n
