One person is dead and two remain missing after a recreational boat carrying 19 people capsized and sank in the San Francisco Bay on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.<\/p>\n
The San Francisco Fire Department was in \u201cfull rescue mode\u201d at 5:30 p.m. with 11 boats and multiple divers scouring the waters for the two missing people, Fire Chief Dean Crispen said at a news conference. Helicopters were also searching by air, and Crispen said the mission would continue at least until dark, if not later. <\/p>\n
\u201cI want to express my condolences to the family members of the deceased,\u201d said San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, \u201cand I want to make sure that every family member out there and everybody knows that we are in an active search. There is much more to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Fire Department and partner agencies responded to a report of a vessel on fire about 600 yards off of Alcatraz Island at 3:35 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, personnel did not see evidence of a fire, but found a three-deck pontoon boat capsized with one person who was severely injured in the water.<\/p>\n
The vessel was mostly underwater and a \u201cmassive rescue operation\u201d was conducted to pull people out of the top level. <\/p>\n
Crews began performing CPR on the severely injured individual and transported them to shore, where they were declared dead at Gashouse Cove Marina, Crispen said. One dog aboard the vessel also died in the accident.<\/p>\n
Three people were transported to a local hospital with impact injuries from falling into the water, while 13 others were safe on shore, he said. <\/p>\n
Windy conditions were generating whitecaps on the water, making visibility challenging for rescuers on Tuesday evening, Crispen said. Authorities were focusing their efforts on an area east of the incident, where it was believed the tide and winds would have carried the two missing passengers. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to continue for hours to make sure that we find these two missing people, if possible,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
The boat launched from near the St. Francis Yacht Club, and it is currently unclear what caused it to capsize. The boat was leaking fuel and continuing to emit exhaust from the motor as it sank. <\/p>\n
