The influx of data centers, as well as crypto-mining facilities and semi-conductor plants into New York state, has put exponential demand on the state\u2019s power grid.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the New York Independent System Operator,<\/a> New York doesn\u2019t have enough power currently to meet expected future demand.<\/p>\n

But there is an agency whose job it is to think ahead and advance New York\u2019s energy system and economy \u2014 the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, or NYSDERDA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

One example of NYSERDA\u2019s work: Over the last few years, it\u2019s ensured that enough solar power is being built in the state to help reduce the total costs of operating the power grid when electricity use is at its highest, during summer heat waves. In 2025, solar saved New Yorkers approximately $90 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n
