{"id":93622,"date":"2025-07-26T08:28:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T08:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/93622\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T08:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T08:28:09","slug":"bob-odenkirk-thinks-he-was-too-hard-on-snl-as-young-writer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/93622\/","title":{"rendered":"Bob Odenkirk thinks he was &#8216;too hard&#8217; on &#8216;SNL&#8217; as young writer"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>Bob Odenkirk thinks he was &#8220;too hard&#8221; on Saturday Night Live when he worked on its writing staff.<\/li>\n<li>The Nobody 2 star says he now has a better perspective on the show: &#8220;It&#8217;s a bigger challenge than I thought.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Odenkirk also says that he &#8220;would love&#8221; to host SNL&#8217;s season 51 premiere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/bob-odenkirk\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Odenkirk<\/a> has found new respect for <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/saturday-night-live\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturday Night Live<\/a> after leaving the show.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> While discussing Nobody 2 at <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/events\/comic-con\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Comic-Con 2025<\/a>, the actor tells Entertainment Weekly that he has gained a better perspective on SNL in the years since he finished his tenure as a writer, which lasted from 1987 to 1991. Although he&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/bob-odenkirk-too-young-snl\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously said that he had a less-than-stellar view of SNL<\/a> while he worked there, he now realizes that he judged the show too harshly.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;I was too hard on the show,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I had a lot of attitude when I got hired there, like, &#8216;This show could be better, this show could be Monty Python, this should be more cutting edge, this should be more dangerous.&#8217; And I was frustrated by it not representing purely my point of view. I wanted it to be me, my show.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Odenkirk now understands that his desire to personally transform the entire voice of SNL was foolhardy. &#8220;It&#8217;s not my show! It&#8217;s a show that is shared by everyone who&#8217;s in that cast, and everyone who&#8217;s in that writing staff, and it&#8217;s shared by generations, and not one generation,&#8221; he says.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> He continues, &#8220;Everybody in America watches it, and it&#8217;s a reference point for everyone. I think the 50th just made me more aware [than] ever of the amazing work that&#8217;s been done there.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The Better Call Saul star also thinks that he got to write boundary-pushing comedy on a later project. &#8220;I think Mr. Show, the show I did with <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/david-cross\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Cross<\/a>, I consider my effort to do something edgy and new and try to blast through some barriers and go to another level,&#8221; he says.\n<\/p>\n<p> Bob Odenkirk on &#8216;Saturday Night Live&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday Night Live\/Youtube<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Odenkirk also admits that he didn&#8217;t fully appreciate how SNL&#8217;s lightning-fast weekly schedule makes its production so difficult. &#8220;It&#8217;s a bigger challenge than I thought it was when I worked there,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;When I worked there I was 25, I was like, &#8216;C&#8217;mon, dammit! We can do better! I&#8217;m friends with everybody there, and I know so many of the writers, and I know so many of the actors.
