July 15 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump criticized New York state’s decision to halt construction of \u200clarge new data centers on Wednesday, saying the \u200cone-year moratorium would drive jobs and tax revenue to other states.<\/p>\n
“New \u200bYork State has made a terrible decision,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, calling data centers “Money Machines” and “LIQUID GOLD” for the states that build them. He said companies seeking \u200cto build them \u2060would be courted by other states including Arizona, Florida, Texas and Alabama.<\/p>\n
Trump also warned that \u2060the moratorium risked ceding ground on artificial intelligence to China and other countries, and he urged New York \u200bto change \u200bcourse.<\/p>\n
New York on Tuesday \u200bbecame the first U.S. \u200cstate to impose such a moratorium, which applies to data centers that use 50 megawatts or more of power to operate. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the facilities threaten to raise utility bills and deplete natural \u200cresources.<\/p>\n
The moratorium positions New York \u200bat the forefront of a \u200bgrowing national debate over \u200bhow to manage the infrastructure needed to \u200csupport AI. While technology companies \u200bare racing \u200bto build new data centers, lawmakers and regulators in dozens of states are weighing measures to limit \u200btheir effect on \u200celectricity grids, utility bills and local communities.<\/p>\n
