Startup profile: Moberg Analytics<\/p>\n
After selling his last medtech company, Dick Moberg could\u2019ve walked away from building brain-monitoring technology. Then AI changed what was possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Now he\u2019s raising venture capital for the first time in decades to turn patient monitoring data into a clinical decision platform.<\/p>\n

Dick Moberg, Moberg Analytics<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Moberg is the founder and CEO of Moberg Analytics<\/a>, a startup building software that collects data from healthcare monitors and helps providers interpret it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we did in my last company is get all this data together on a display,\u201d he told Technical.ly. \u201cWhat we\u2019re doing in my new company is taking that data and adding AI and analytics to it to try to guide the [doctors] and nurses who are managing the patient to actually do more precision care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Moberg\u2019s platform collects data from brain monitors and other devices that track a patient\u2019s vitals, like heart and lung monitors. The system also taps into electronic medical records to identify medications the patient is taking.<\/p>\n
So far, the company is working with nine hospitals in the United States and Europe, Moberg said. He tapped his network from past companies to help support the startup.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s Moberg\u2019s fourth brain-monitoring product and third company.<\/p>\n
He worked for the University of Pennsylvania<\/a> spinout Interspec for almost 10 years from 1980 to 1989, where he developed a device to monitor brain and spinal cord activity during surgery. In 1990, he spun off his first company, Moberg Medical, from that first device and continued working on brain monitoring technology.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In 1998, he started Moberg ICU Solutions, a product that aggregated data about the patient from other monitors. He grew the company for about 20 years before selling to a private equity group.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He stayed around for a few years to help with the transition, then moved on during the pandemic to launch Moberg Analytics. The startup is focused on neurocritical care units right now, but similar challenges in other medical units could expand its market, he said.<\/p>\n
Eventually, Moberg Analytics aims to tap into medical imaging like MRI or CT scans, Moberg said. It\u2019s also testing agentic AI<\/a> use cases that lets providers \u201ctalk to\u201d the data and get an overview of how patients are doing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Scaling toward a new standard of care<\/p>\n
When Moberg left his second company, Moberg ICU Solutions, he was able to take the remaining funding from a Department of War (DoW) grant with him to launch Moberg Analytics.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company later secured additional DoW and the National Institutes of Health funding as well to keep things going, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When the Trump Administration took office in January 2025, there was a lot of uncertainty around grant funding<\/a>. That\u2019s when one of Moberg Analytics\u2019 grants got cut, and Moberg realized he needed to pivot from relying on government money to revenue and venture funding, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Moberg\u2019s last company wasn\u2019t venture-backed, so he was out of practice navigating today\u2019s fundraising environment.<\/p>\n
The funding and resource environment in Philly is better now than it was 20 years ago, he said, and Ben Franklin Technology Partners<\/a> led the company\u2019s seed round.<\/p>\n
\u201c[Ben Franklin] launched the commercial part of our company, and with that money, we\u2019ve now gone and developed a product that is used in hospitals,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company raised $600,000 toward its $2 million seed round last fall to help test the product. Now, the company is working to raise the rest of it to get regulatory clearances and support research and development, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Going forward, Moberg would like the tool to become a standard of care in hospitals, he said. He wants new device makers to integrate with Moberg Analytics from the start.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to be the brain sensor hub with our company,\u201d Moberg said. \u201cYou can only do that if you have a wide footprint.\u201d<\/p>\n
