They show the milestones from Holocaust survivor Bill Orlin’s life. Each image invites visitors to pause, smile and ask another question.

Bill Orlin shows off his memories.

About a year ago, Orlin, 94, moved from the home where he had lived for more than four decades into a senior living residence.

As the family packed, they gathered photographs that had been scattered throughout his house. Some were found in boxes buried deep inside closets. Ten to 12 boxes of photographs were eventually placed in storage.

That’s when son-in-law Dennis Pickett saw an opportunity.

Pickett carefully sorted through the boxes and transformed the barren walls of Orlin’s new apartment into a visual timeline.

“This makes my house warm,” Orlin said. “It makes my house a home; not an apartment building – a home. Look, when people come in here, they see all these pictures. Dennis put them in order to where they represent something. Each group is a story in itself.”

The exhibit begins with a 1947 photograph of 15-year-old Orlin with his three brothers and parents, taken in a DP camp in Germany.

Another image captures him at his father’s house with his young daughters. Farther down the wall are photographs from his wedding to Edie (Saunders). The couple married at Rabbi Hyman Judah Schachtel’s home, where the rabbi officiated.

Another photo, from when he was 72, comes from his Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel; then again, celebrating it in Jerusalem at the Kotel in 1985.

One photograph shows a 23-year-old Orlin serving in the Army. Another marks the day he became a United States citizen.

There are treasured family moments everywhere: a stunning photograph taken 50 years ago of daughter Julie sitting on the very same sofa that remains in Orlin’s home today. There is a portrait of Edie at 19 and, nearby, another is framed by hearts celebrating the couple’s 50th anniversary. There are countless photographs of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On a different wall, colorful watercolor paintings of menorahs, landscapes and houses reveal Orlin’s artistic talent.

Although not displayed on the wall, one keepsake holds a place of honor on the coffee table: a book of photographs presented to Orlin by Holocaust Museum Houston, a gift he treasures with pride.

“If it weren’t for Dennis, he wouldn’t have his life on the wall,” daughter Julie Pickett told the JHV. “For Dennis to take the time to meticulously hang the pictures … it’s like going into an art gallery, but it’s Bill Orlin’s art gallery.”

The photos are more than wall décor; they prompt memories, preserving moments that have shaped Orlin’s life.

“He’s going to live here for the rest of his life. And for him to walk through that door every single day and to see all these pictures – his grandkids and his step-kids – is just great,” Dennis said.

Every photograph tells part of Orlin’s story.

Together, they tell the story of a life remembered, a family cherished and a house that finally feels like home.

The first thing visitors notice isn’t the furniture or the view.
