Andrew Cuomo, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/23\/business\/kalshi-shows-bettors-putting-money-on-zohran-mamdani-beating-andrew-cuomo-in-nyc-mayoral-pr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a stunning new poll released earlier in the day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA familiar dilemma: a moderate, business-friendly Democrat versus a democratic socialist. New Yorkers, take it from Chicago \u2014 we\u2019ve seen this movie before, and the ending isn\u2019t pretty,\u201d the board of one of the last remaining big-city daily newspapers cautioned. <\/p>\n<p>The paper\u2019s editorial board paints a bleak image of Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democratic socialist Queens assemblyman. Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>The Tribune likened Mamdani\u2019s buzz-worthy campaign, which has garnered a historic amount of grassroots support, to that of embattled progressive Windy City Mayor Brandon Johnson, whose took office in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohnson\u2019s approval rating cratered in his second year \u2014 a reflection of how quickly progressive promises collapsed under the weight of governance and Chicago\u2019s financial reality,\u201d the paper wrote. \u201cWhat sounded good in theory has translated into dysfunction, driven by fiscal missteps and political inexperience.<\/p>\n<p>The Tribune likened Mamdani\u2019s buzz-worthy campaign, which has garnered a historic amount of grassroots support. NurPhoto via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohnson is one of the most progressive mayors in the U.S., but Mamdani, inarguably, is yet more radical,\u201d it continued. <\/p>\n<p>The outlet pointed out that many of Mamdani\u2019s ideas \u2014 such as rent freezes, city-operated supermarkets and free transit \u2014 are \u201cshared (at least in principle) by Mayor Brandon Johnson, and many of them are popular in blue cities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohnson is one of the most progressive mayors in the U.S., but Mamdani, inarguably, is yet more radical,\u201d it continued. LP Media<\/p>\n<p>But was quick to argue that \u201cexperience has taught us here that\u00a0far-left candidates do not make for effective or popular municipal executives in today\u2019s stressful economy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The ed-board drew parallels between Mamdani\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/18\/us-news\/gov-hochul-rips-zohran-mamdanis-tax-on-rich-admits-costs-are-pushing-nyers-to-palm-beach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> freebie-filled platform<\/a>, which he plans to fund with tax hikes to bring in roughly $10 billion annually, to that of Johnson\u2019s similarly overzealous tax proposal. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohnson tried to float a $300 million tax hike \u2014 and failed. He tried to pass a \u2018mansion tax\u2019 that would\u2019ve hiked the real estate transfer tax \u2014 and failed,\u201d the Tribune highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>The ed-board drew parallels between Mamdani\u2019s freebie-filled platform to that of Johnson\u2019s similarly overzealous tax proposal. Chicago Tribune<\/p>\n<p>The Tribune was the latest to pile on to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/16\/opinion\/in-a-fit-of-common-sense-the-times-echoes-our-anti-mamdani-endorsement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent wave <\/a>of news outlets denouncing the Queens pol\u2019s ambitious run.<\/p>\n<p>Follow The Post\u2019s coverage of the NYC mayoral race<\/p>\n<p>The paper echoed sentiments shared by myriad New York publications, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/23\/opinion\/how-bad-is-zohran-mamdani-for-new-york-let-us-count-the-ways\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including The Post<\/a>, Daily News and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/16\/opinion\/in-a-fit-of-common-sense-the-times-echoes-our-anti-mamdani-endorsement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> \u2014 who have discouraged voters from ranking the socialist candidate, whose too-good-to-be-true platform is just that, they say.<\/p>\n<p>A through line in the anti-endorsements of the two-term Assemblyman is his lack of experience and the unrealistic nature of his policies.<\/p>\n<p>The Tribune was the latest to pile on to the recent wave of news outlets denouncing the Queens pol\u2019s ambitious run.
