Among those appointed are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beth Spear, who was appointed by board President Mike Grabowski<\/li>\n<li>David Branham, who was appointed by trustee Chris Parker<\/li>\n<li>Megan Waldrop, who was appointed by trustee Oscar Silva<\/li>\n<li>Cynthia Calvert, who was appointed by trustee Ken Kirchhofer<\/li>\n<li>Tiffany Thomas, who was appointed by trustee Elizabeth Shaw<\/li>\n<li>Jessica Hadley, who was appointed by trustee Marques Holmes<\/li>\n<li>Susie Helms, who was appointed by trustee Robert Scarfo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The appointments are coming after trustees voted in June to <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/lake-houston-humble-kingwood\/education\/humble-isd-votes-to-reduce-size-of-districts-school-library-advisory-council\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reduce the size<\/a> of the committee from 21 members to a minimum of seven.<\/p>\n<p>During the board\u2019s June 16 meeting, Grabowski said the change was being recommended after board members received feedback suggesting 21 members was too large a group to manage.<\/p>\n<p>The SLAC was established as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/lake-houston-humble-kingwood\/education\/humble-isd-votes-to-reduce-size-of-districts-school-library-advisory-council\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 13<\/a>, which passed in the 89th Texas Legislature earlier this year and expands parental rights to review and question instructional and library materials used in the district.<\/p>\n<p>The bill allows districts to form local \u201cschool library advisory councils\u201d if at least 50 parents or 10% of the parents in the district, whichever is less, sign a petition requesting a council. The councils must have at least five members, most of whom are parents.
