{"id":94297,"date":"2025-07-26T14:33:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T14:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/94297\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T14:33:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T14:33:09","slug":"trump-plays-golf-in-scotland-as-protesters-take-to-the-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/94297\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump plays golf in Scotland as protesters take to the streets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump played golf Saturday at <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-scotland-golf-course-opening-legal-issues-92aa09043e036d6aa87ad99e5fd755bb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his course on Scotland\u2019s coast<\/a> while protesters around the country took to the streets to decry <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-scotland-mother-ancestry-golf-d31dadc1ef89591b82efaabfdcb2ddde\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his visit<\/a> and accuse United Kingdom leaders of pandering to the American.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and his son Eric played with the U.S. ambassador to Britain, Warren Stephens, near Turnberry, a historic course that the Trump family\u2019s company took over in 2014. Security was tight around the Turnberry course, and protesters kept at a distance were unseen by the group during Trump\u2019s round. He was dressed in black, with a white \u201cUSA\u201d cap, and was spotted driving a golf cart.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on the cobblestone and tree-lined street in front of the U.S. Consulate about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away in Edinburgh, Scotland\u2019s capital. Speakers on a makeshift stage told the crowd that Trump was not welcome and they criticized <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/keir-starmer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">British Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/a> for striking a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-starmer-trade-deal-beef-g7-52bea5eb383a0b45d0d83e1982d277bf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent trade deal<\/a> to avoid stiff U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> on goods imported from the U.K. <\/p>\n<p>Protests were planned in other cities as environmental activists, opponents of Israel\u2019s war with Hamas in Gaza and pro-Ukraine groups loosely formed a \u201cStop Trump Coalition.\u201d Anita Bhadani, an organizer, said the protests were \u201ckind of like a carnival of resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>June Osbourne, 52, a photographer and photo historian from Edinburgh wore a red cloak and white hood, recalling \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale.\u201d Osbourne held up picture of Trump with \u201cResist\u201d stamped over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there are far too many countries that are feeling the pressure of Trump and that they feel that they have to accept him and we should not accept him here,\u201d Osbourne said. The dual-U.S.-British citizen said the Republican president was \u201cthe worst thing that has happened to the world, the U.S., in decades.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s late mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland and the president has suggested he feels right at home in the country. But the protesters were out to make him feel unwelcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I could just stand by and not do anything,\u201d said Amy White, 15, of Edinburgh, who attended with her parents. She held a cardboard sign that said \u201cWe don\u2019t negotiate with fascists.\u201d She said \u201dso many people here loathe him. We\u2019re not divided. We\u2019re not divided by religion, or race or political allegiance, we\u2019re just here together because we hate him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other demonstrators held signs of pictures with Trump and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/jeffrey-epstein\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> as the fervor over files in the case has increasingly frustrated the president.<\/p>\n<p>In the view of Mark Gorman, 63, of Edinburgh, \u201cthe vast majority of Scots have this sort of feeling about Trump that, even though he has Scottish roots, he\u2019s a disgrace.\u201d Gorman, who works in advertising, said he came out \u201cbecause I have deep disdain for Donald Trump and everything that he stands for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s protests were not nearly as large as the throngs that came out across Scotland when Trump played at the resort during his first term in 2018. <\/p>\n<p>But as bagpipes played, people chanted \u201cTrump Out!\u201d and raised homemade signs that said \u201cNo red carpet for dictators,\u201d \u201cWe don\u2019t want you here\u201d and \u201cStop Trump. Migrants welcome.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>One dog had a sign that said \u201cNo treats for tyrants.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Some on the far right took to social media to call for gatherings supporting Trump in places such as Glasgow. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Scottish First Minister John Swinney, who is also set to meet with Trump during the visit, announced that public money will go to staging the 2025 Nexo Championship, previously known previously as the Scottish Championship, at Trump\u2019s first course near Aberdeen next month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Scottish Government recognizes the importance and benefits of golf and golf events, including boosting tourism and our economy,\u201d Swinney said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also plans to talk trade with Starmer and Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president. But golf is a major focus. <\/p>\n<p>The Trump family will also visit another Trump course, in the Aberdeen area in northeastern Scotland. They plan to cut a ribbon on Tuesday, opening the second Trump course. <\/p>\n<p>At a protest Saturday in Aberdeen, Scottish Parliament member Maggie Chapman told the crowd of hundreds: \u201cWe stand in solidarity, not only against Trump but against everything he and his politics stand for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president has long lobbied for Turnberry <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-turnberry-dechambeau-british-open-312c12266062ffe863566c10e9049dff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to host the British Open<\/a>, which it has not done since he took over ownership. <\/p>\n<p>In a social media post Saturday, Trump quoted the retired golfer Gary Player as saying Turnberry was among the \u201cTop Five Greatest Golf Courses\u201d he had played in as a professional.
