{"id":94529,"date":"2025-07-26T16:41:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T16:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/94529\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T16:41:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T16:41:11","slug":"san-diego-comics-vets-upstarts-share-space-on-comic-con-floor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/94529\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego comics vets, upstarts share space on Comic-Con floor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two local companies are making their return to Comic-Con with new comics and books, while a new upstart powered by some industry heavyweights is making its presence felt.<\/p>\n<p>For the third year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printersrowpublishinggroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Printers Row Publishing Group<\/a> has a booth where it is showcasing a variety of new books. The Sorrento Valley-based company, started in 1992, has published more than 800 books.<\/p>\n<p>This year at Comic-Con, Printers Row is promoting a \u201cStranger Things\u201d book \u2013 its release is set to coincide with the fall return of the hit Netflix show. Also new is a \u201cLilo &amp; Stitch\u201d color-by-numbers book. In addition, a new format called platinum relief that appears to give a 3D look is being used on some book covers.<\/p>\n<p>Printers Row Vice President and Publisher Peter Norton said attending Comic-Con for the third year in a row has helped him and the company converse directly with consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re living and learning,\u201d said Norton.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/magmacomix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magma Comix<\/a> debuted at the Con last year and returned this year with a panel promoting their work and a booth on the convention floor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timesofsandiego.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0.clv_.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"278\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0.clv_.jpg\" alt=\"Comics publisher publisher Hank Kanalz in front of his company's booth.\" class=\"wp-image-333906\"  \/><\/a>Hank Kanalz at the Clover Press booth at Comic-Con. (Photo by Luis Monteagudo Jr.\/Times of San Diego)<\/p>\n<p>Company officials announced a collaboration with\u00a0Heavy Metal\u00a0magazine that will lead to strips being published in the mag. The company also was riding high with anticipation after one of its works,\u00a0The Pedestrian, was nominated for Best New Series in the annual Eisner Awards (the industry\u2019s version of the Oscars), which are held each year at Comic-Con.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really a big honor just to be nominated,\u201d said founder Denton Tipton.<\/p>\n<p>At the far end of the convention floor was <a href=\"https:\/\/cloverpress.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clover Press<\/a>, the latest player in San Diego\u2019s comics industry.<\/p>\n<p>Clover was started by Ted Adams and Robbie Robbins, a couple of former executives at IDW Publishing, which used to be located at Liberty Station.<\/p>\n<p>Clover, which has a small office in Mira Mesa, was supposed to launch in 2019, but that was delayed by the global pandemic. They launched for good in March 2022, publishing a wide variety of books, including fantasy and horror.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the company has published more than 75 books, including works by international artists from Korea, Taiwan and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe publish books we like,\u201d said Clover\u2019s Hank Kanalz.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first year Clover Press has made it to Comic-Con. Kanalz noted that for years, the comics industry has been based out of New York City.
