And unlike the legendary 1859 Carrington Event\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/how-the-carrington-event-let-telegraphs-run-on-aurora-p-1686759750\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which knocked out telegraphs across Europe and North America<\/a> and dragged the Northern Lights down to Florida\u2014some have happened recently enough to give us a sense of how modern electronics might fare. Solar radiation from 2003\u2019s \u201cHalloween Storms,\u201d for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/ams\/assets\/file\/spacwx_gps_2010.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disrupted<\/a> a Federal Aviation Administration navigation system for 26 hours and led to the FAA\u2019s first ever advisory <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/f7811e0713c9\/wmo-caem-newsletter-issue-12018#Item%2019:~:text=One%20has%20to,excessive%20radiation%20doses.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warning<\/a> of excessive radiation doses on commercial flights.<\/p>\n<p>But space physicists led by NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland have recently determined that the very rarity of these major solar storms means scientists and policymakers have likely been underestimating the worst-case scenarios for solar weather\u2019s impact. As detailed in their new <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-026-10757-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>, published in the journal Nature, ongoing \u201cerroneous measurements\u201d have also skewed these estimates, bolstering the reigning theory that there is some kind of upper limit to the bursts of solar storm energy that can be transferred into Earth\u2019s polar ionosphere. Shockingly, there may be no limit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, these very extreme cases are rare, but this also means we have limited data to work with and only time will tell what happens at the very extreme one-in-a-thousand-year kind of event,\u201d study coauthor Maria Walach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1135865\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in a statement.\u00a0\u201cIf there is no upper limit to our planet\u2019s response to the solar wind, modelling for extreme cases needs to take this into account and we should be vigilant of space weather effects,\u201d according to Walach, a space physics lecturer at Lancaster University.<\/p>\n<p> A \u2018problem of definition\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>The problem, according to Walach and her coauthors, starts not with any kind of equipment error, but in some of the basic assumptions that have long gone into how physicists interpret their space weather measurements.<\/p>\n<p>Spacecraft like NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/svs.gsfc.nasa.gov\/14888\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IMAP<\/a>, for example, hover a little under one million miles from Earth in a gravitational sweet spot known as Lagrange point one (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/L1_the_first_Lagrangian_Point\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">L1<\/a>), where they can provide consistent early warning data on solar emissions toward Earth. At L1, these probes are essentially resting stationary, locked in an orbit where Earth\u2019s and the Sun\u2019s respective gravitational pulls cancel each other out. But\u2014like guessing the power of an ocean wave as it laps against the sand by measuring its thundering power back when it crested\u2014these measurements fail to take into account dissipating effects as a solar eruption\u2019s high-energy particles careen through space.<\/p>\n<p>The result is that this data appears to reliably overestimate the actual solar wind hitting Earth\u2019s ionosphere, relying on measurements taken before these particles hit the protective blunt force of our planet\u2019s magnetosheath, where solar storms are \u201cinfluenced by local plasma and field conditions,\u201d the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe usually assume the truth may be around its measurement. But probability theory says it leans one way,\u201d the study\u2019s lead author, NASA Goddard physicist Nithin Sivadas, said in a statement. \u201cThat\u2019s why space weather risks appear underestimated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Closer to Earth <\/p>\n<p>Walach, Sivadas, and their colleagues focused their attention on space weather measurements from satellites closer to the Earth, including <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/ai-algorithm-takes-us-closer-to-forecasting-the-northern-lights-2000548662\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA\u2019s THEMIS all-sky imager<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mms.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MMS<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/helio.data.nasa.gov\/mission\/DoubleStar1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DoubleStar<\/a>, among others. This suite of craft allowed them to compare over a million solar wind measurements in contrast to ordinary readings of the magnetosheath and magnetosphere far up at the edge of Earth\u2019s upper atmosphere and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Long story short, \u201cthere is currently no statistical evidence to suggest an upper limit to the energy transferred from the solar wind to the polar ionosphere,\u201d the researchers concluded.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the rarity of extreme solar storms contributes to researchers\u2019 present uncertainty. \u201cOur planet\u2019s magnetic field does a really great job of protecting us against many space weather effects,\u201d Walach noted. \u201cThere are however extreme cases, where satellites unexpectedly fall back to Earth, or we lose communication and GPS signals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until a big storm arrives, in other words, it might be hard to predict how Earth\u2019s magnetosphere might hold up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cataclysmic solar storms may be rare, but they do happen.
