{"id":94572,"date":"2025-07-26T17:03:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T17:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/94572\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T17:03:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T17:03:08","slug":"watch-party-phl-and-temple-womens-basketball-celebrate-the-citys-addition-of-a-wnba-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/94572\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Party PHL and Temple women\u2019s basketball celebrate the city\u2019s addition of a WNBA team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">From the outside, Libertee Grounds looked like a typical Friday night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But inside and down the stairs of the Girard Ave. and 16th St. building, about 100 passionate women\u2019s sports fans laughed, played mini golf, watched basketball, and celebrated their city getting a WNBA team in 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Hosted by <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/watchpartyphl?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaeVxqR8lBtB52VXn7Ys7U3BJFt5yv8Hb16VMliEzG47nwKdp9ultQs4EwGdNg_aem_-qUeSyjmHWs5gs3ihzCTCw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/watchpartyphl?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaeVxqR8lBtB52VXn7Ys7U3BJFt5yv8Hb16VMliEzG47nwKdp9ultQs4EwGdNg_aem_-qUeSyjmHWs5gs3ihzCTCw\">Watch Party PHL<\/a>, the crowd gathered to watch the New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury WNBA game, which featured local stars Natasha Cloud, a Broomall native, on the Liberty and North Philly\u2019s Kaleah Copper for the Mercury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Among those watching, were first-timers, regulars, and the Temple women\u2019s basketball team and staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cTo see all these people care about women\u2019s sports, it\u2019s good for the community but especially for us because we\u2019re in women\u2019s sports, so just to see the love it\u2019s really good,\u201d said Sheyenne Swain-Price, a junior forward for the Owls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She said Cloud and Copper\u2019s success shows that there\u2019s opportunities for players from any Division I school \u2014 Cloud played at St. Joe\u2019s, while Copper went to Rutgers \u2014 and that the Temple team loves to support the locals in the WNBA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Watch Party PHL was founded by Philadelphia firefighter Jen Leary in March of 2024, with two main goals in mind. She wanted to create an inclusive space for monthly women\u2019s sports watch parties, and prove to the WNBA that there\u2019s enough demand and support for a professional women\u2019s basketball team in Philly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Both of those goals have been met. The WNBA\u2019s announcement of adding a team in Philly came over a year after her first watch party, and the events have seen much success, so she started hosting three or more a month. Leary plans to open a brick and mortar location in spring 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE: <a data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/restaurants\/womens-sports-bars-philadelphia-wnba-20250627.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Women\u2019s sports bars are about to have their moment to cheer in Philadelphia<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThe goal has changed,\u201d Leary said. \u201cWe want to continue to build this community and this fandom, to show the W that they made the right decision, and as we continue to build on the numbers that come out to our watch parties, we\u2019ll build the numbers that will fill those seats when the team comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Watch Party PHL is a hub for all women\u2019s sports, not just basketball. They host soccer, hockey, and tennis events, spanning across multiple leagues, and big-name events like Wimbledon and the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Leary partners with local businesses and sports organizations for mutual benefit, they can sell merchandise and tell people about their teams, and they bring more eyes from their communities to the watch party movement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">One of those businesses is <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/go-hamm.square.site\/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaeJcmJi5Xe425f1r2I6sQEDZm1YoThCLavklNrpLKlWvWARYKxLIymqvESTDw_aem_kZkPXcH5TIn-KsZb2bBO2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/go-hamm.square.site\/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaeJcmJi5Xe425f1r2I6sQEDZm1YoThCLavklNrpLKlWvWARYKxLIymqvESTDw_aem_kZkPXcH5TIn-KsZb2bBO2A\">Go Hamm<\/a>, which sells women\u2019s sports merchandise. Owner Mollie Cusak was at Friday\u2019s event selling an exclusive \u201cPhilly is a women\u2019s sports town &#8211; Est. 2030\u201d shirt, designed with Watch Party as a nod to the WNBA team coming to Philly in five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">On the team side, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skilladelphiabasketballacademy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.skilladelphiabasketballacademy.org\/\">Skilladelphia Basketball Academy\u2019s<\/a> co-founder Mac Casey and his daughter Annie were in attendance. SBA is a nonprofit that provides developmental basketball clinics to girls and nonbinary players ages 6 to 14. He said the same is true for Watch Party PHL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWe\u2019re really enthusiastic about what they\u2019re doing, it\u2019s a wonderful community,\u201d Casey said. \u201cI really like for [my daughter] to see it. It\u2019s good for kids to see people that look like them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Added Annie, who\u2019s age nine: \u201cI\u2019m really excited for the [WNBA] team. I definitely want to get tickets and go see them play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Fans in the crowd shared similar excitement for 2030, including Temple women\u2019s basketball coach Diane Richardson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s about time,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cThis is a women\u2019s sports town, and I hate that we have to wait five years, but that means at least five years we\u2019ve got to build the momentum for the fans so that when they come, they sell out. So I\u2019m excited about it, I think they\u2019ll do great here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She believes her team has been able to grow their fanbase. In her three seasons as at the helm, they\u2019ve quadrupled their attendance, now averaging 1,800 fans at home games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It shows the direction that women\u2019s sports is heading, she said, especially in Philly, and enthusiasm is growing among fans and players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\"><b>\u00bb READ MORE: <a data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/wnba\/cheryl-reeve-wnba-all-star-game-philadelphia-coach-20250721.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve says Philly is finally ready for a WNBA team \u2014 and is excited for its impact on girls basketball<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s a realization that people are now looking at women\u2019s basketball, and they want to represent it well,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cThey want to play. They\u2019re like, \u2018OK, people are looking at us now, let\u2019s go.\u2019 And so it\u2019s really spurred them in practice. Now they\u2019re thinking pro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Richardson had a reason to celebrate at the end of Friday\u2019s game. Her adopted daughter, Jonquel Jones, led the New York Liberty to a win with 20 points and 11 assists. This was her second game back from an ankle injury that sidelined her for a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cShe was ready to come back, and she\u2019s going to get back on this season where she was doing really well before the injury, she\u2019s hungry for it,\u201d Richardson said. \u201cI think the awareness around professional teams is growing, and everyone\u2019s going to be hungry for the team here, when it comes in five years.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"From the outside, Libertee Grounds looked like a typical Friday night.
