\n\tSUNDAY AM:<\/strong> Odysseus\u2019 boatload of cash from his global voyage just got bigger with Universal<\/a>\u2018s Christopher Nolan<\/a> epic The Odyssey<\/a> raking in $264.1M <\/strong>worldwide, again a record start for the director ahead of Dark Knight Rises <\/strong>($249M WW).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe foreign start of $139.6M is also the director\u2019s biggest international opening ever ahead of Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight Rises in like-for-like markets. The Odyssey bowed in 73 territories, 12,700 locations and 25,600 screens. Still the second best star for a R-rated movie abroad after Deadpool & Wolverine. In addition it\u2019s Universal\u2019s biggest opening ever in 11 markets and Nolan\u2019s biggest in 48 countries including France, Italy, India, Spain, Brazil, Netherlands and Poland. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the UK-France third place World Cup game yesterday slowed evening business in the former, The Odyssey was still a big result for Nolan there. Uni has factored the impact of the final Spain-Argentina World Cup game with Spain already a record opening for Nolan with $5.2M, well above Oppenheimer. The Odyssey also clocked Spain\u2019s biggest ever opening Friday and Saturday in Imax and 70mm.<\/p>\n

\n\tArgentina and Vietnam were the only notable territories to see The Odyssey open to 2 respectively with $1M and $602K. Blame the World Cup on Argentina. In Vietnam, a muscular Matt Damon is being bested by the anime feature Detective Conan. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe first-ever theatrical release shot in Imax entirely counted $51.8M from the large format exhibitor\u2019s screens with $6.3M coming from 41 screens with 70MM, a $153K screen average. North America alone counted $29.6M, repping close to 24% market share of the weekend from 444 auditoriums. Overseas, Imax saw $22.2M from 441 sites, a 16% share of the B.O. Twenty-six markets delivered the biggest Imax opening of all-time including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Mexico and Argentina. The film has yet to open in South Korea (Aug. 5), China, (Aug. 14), and Japan (Sept. 11). <\/p>\n

\n\tNote the No. 1 openings in Asian territories such as Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia will fuel a groundswell off buzz when The Odyssey lands in Korea, China and Japan. Nolan and cast are traveling to China and Korea to tub thump the movie before its opening. <\/p>\n

\n\tBreakdown: <\/p>\n

\n\tNolan\u2019s homeland of the UK, natch, led with $17.4M, his 2nd biggest bow in the market (narrowly below The Dark Knight Rises\u00a0and well above Oppenheimer). After just 2 days, the epic was already the 4th biggest Imax release of the year. The BFI IMAX reported their biggest 3-day opening ever, with presales already putting the film within that site\u2019s Top 3 all-time grosses.<\/p>\n

\n\tFrance clocked $13.7M, delivering Nolan\u2019s biggest ever opening in the market, significantly above Oppenheimer. The brand new\u00a0Path\u00e9\u00a0Odysseum Montpellier, France\u2019s first ever 70mm Imax site, opened for our release and sold out all shows.<\/p>\n

\n\tItaly\u00a0opened to $11.5M, far above Oppenheimer and surpassing the lifetimes of Dunkirk and Tenet. The pic is Nolan\u2019s biggest ever opening day and weekend, Universal\u2019s biggest ever opening day and weekend, and the biggest opening days in both Imax and 70mm.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Australia, The Odyssey\u00a0opened to $9.3M, delivering the biggest opening of the year\u00a0and Nolan\u2019s second\u00a0biggest opening weekend\u00a0(just off The Dark Knight Rises and well above Oppenheimer).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tGermany debuted to $8.1M this weekend, delivering Nolan\u2019s second\u00a0biggest opening weekend\u00a0(just off The Dark Knight Rises and above Oppenheimer). Thursday marked the biggest ever IMAX opening day(beating Avatar 3) and biggest 70mm opening day\u00a0(beating Oppenheimer).<\/p>\n

\n\tIndia, where Holland, Damon and Nolan traveled to, delivered $7.2M, the 2 Oscar winning filmmaker\u2019s biggest ever opening in the market\u00a0and Universal\u2019s biggest 3-day opening of all time, already surpassing the lifetimes of The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk, Interstellar and Tenet. It has also achieved the biggest IMAX opening ever for a Hollywood film.<\/p>\n

\n\tMexico opened to $7M, Nolan\u2019s second biggest opening in the market, narrowly behind The Dark Knight Rises\u00a0and well ahead of Oppenheimer, already surpassing the lifetimes of Interstellar, Inception,\u00a0Dunkirk and Tenet. The Odyssey achieved the market\u2019s biggest IMAX opening day ever.<\/p>\n

\n\tBrazil\u2019s debut was $4.8M, nearly double Oppenheimer to achieve Nolan\u2019s biggest ever opening in the market, also surpassing the lifetimes of Interstellar, Inception, Dunkirk and Tenet. Thursday achieved Nolan\u2019s biggest opening day in the market\u00a0and the biggest IMAX opening day of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSaudi Arabia\u00a0\u2018s $3M is Nolan\u2019s second biggest opening and\u00a0Universal\u2019s second\u00a0biggest opening of all time\u00a0behind\u00a0Oppenheimer.\u00a0The Odyssey\u00a0has already\u00a0surpassed the lifetimes of Interstellar and Dark Knight Rises. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tU.A.E. is also $3M, neck-and-neck with\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0as\u00a0Nolan\u2019s second biggest opening\u00a0in the market.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetherlands\u00a0bowed to $2.8M, besting\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0to achieve\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest ever opening weekend there. It also recorded the\u00a0biggest opening day of the year, the\u00a0biggest ever opening day in Imax and 70mm, and\u00a0Universal\u2019s second biggest opening day of all time. <\/p>\n

\n\tPoland\u00a0opened to\u00a0$2.2M,\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest opening in the market, well above\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0and\u00a0surpassing the lifetime of\u00a0Tenet.<\/p>\n

\n\tDenmark began with $1.9M, well above\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0to achieve\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest ever opening in the market\u00a0and the\u00a0biggest opening of the year.<\/p>\n

\n\tBelgium\u00a0opened to\u00a0$1.8M, the\u00a0biggest opening of the year\u00a0and\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest ever opening weekend, well above\u00a0Oppenheimer. There has been an enormous campaign to promote the new 70mm IMAX format in the market (at Kinepolis Brussels), leading to an excellent share from this site.<\/p>\n

\n\tTurkey\u00a0saw\u00a0$1.8M, more than double\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0to deliver\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest opening\u00a0(in GBO).<\/p>\n

\n\tColombia\u00a0counted $1.6M, outgrossing\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0to deliver\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest ever opening\u00a0in the market.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThailand\u00a0debuted to $1.6M, almost double\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0to achieve\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest non-superhero opening in the market. It delivered the\u00a0market\u2019s biggest ever opening Friday and Saturday in Imax.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndonesia, a market which studios eye as becoming the next frontier, started with $1.6M, far outgrossing\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0to become\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest opening of all time.\u00a0The Odyssey\u00a0is on track to deliver the\u00a0biggest Imax opening of 2026\u00a0and rank\u00a0within the Top 3 Imax openings of all time.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn\u00a0Sweden,\u00a0The Odyssey\u00a0had the\u00a0widest analogue release since cinema became digital with a $1.5M opening. That\u2019s Nolan\u2019s biggest non-superhero opening in the market, neck-and-neck with\u00a0The Dark Knight Rises\u00a0and above\u00a0Oppenheimer. It\u2019s also Uni\u2019s third biggest opening of all-time. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn\u00a0Taiwan,\u00a0The Odyssey\u00a0grossed\u00a0$1.5M, far above\u00a0Oppenheimer. Friday achieved the\u00a0biggest MPA opening day of the year, the\u00a0biggest Imax opening for a Nolan title\u00a0and the\u00a0biggest Imax opening day of the year.<\/p>\n

\n\tNorway\u00a0debuted to $1.5M, beating\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0to become\u00a0Nolan\u2019s biggest 3-day opening in the market\u00a0as well as\u00a0Universal\u2019s third biggest 3-day opening of all time. <\/p>\n

\n\tSATURDAY UPDATE:<\/strong> Not sunny weather, nor World Cup is hindering Universal\u2019s The Odyssey <\/strong>which as of this morning is on its way to becoming Christopher Nolan\u2019s best global opening ever with $257.8M<\/strong>, which puts away his previous highs of The Dark Knight Rises ($249M WW debut), The Dark Knight ($198M WW) and Oppenheimer ($180M WW).<\/p>\n

\n\tAs far as the top global openings year-to-date, it\u2019s the best for a live-action movie quite easily, but it\u2019s third overall behind Universal\/Illumination\/Nintendo\u2019s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u00a0($372.5M WW) and Disney\/Pixar\u2019s\u00a0Toy Story 5 ($312M WW). <\/p>\n

\n\tWith domestic at $120.5M, the best live-action debut in North America YTD, The Odyssey is shaping up for a $137.3M opening in 73 offshore markets including UK & Ireland, France, Australia, Germany, Mexico, and Brazil,\u00a0That\u2019s also the biggest ever opening for 2x Oscar winner Nolan at the international B.O., above\u00a0Oppenheimer\u00a0and\u00a0The Dark Knight Rises. Even more so, he\u2019s seeing several record openings of his career with Odyssey in 45 territories including France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Netherlands and Brazil. The feature take of Homer\u2019s classic poem is also Universal\u2019s biggest opening ever in 11 markets.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Odyssey is also ranking as the second biggest R-rated opening of all time internationally, behind\u00a0Deadpool & Wolverine ($233.3M). <\/p>\n

\n\tFRIDAY UPDATE: <\/strong>While Odysseus encountered many obstacles on his way home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, from Cyclops to Calypso, he doesn\u2019t have to really worry about any, specifically the World Cup, in his march to the top of this weekend\u2019s global box office.<\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal\u2019s feature take of Homer\u2019s epic poem from Christopher Nolan already has conquered close to $40M in its first few days at the worldwide B.O. ($39.8M <\/strong>to be exact). Broken out, that\u2019s $17.6M in North American previews<\/a>, as we\u2019ve told you, plus another $22.2M<\/strong> running offshore cume. Seventy-three markets are going this weekend in more than 13,300 foreign locations and 25,100 screens, sans China, Japan, Korea and CIS. As we told you, that\u2019s more than Nolan\u2019s Oppenheimer, which debuted in the same markets across 11,300 sites and 17,500 screens in 2023. Thursday alone grossed $18.9M.<\/p>\n

\n\tOffshore count for Imax is 440 screens, which includes seven Imax 70MM screens, two of which opened in time for Nolan\u2019s latest. Additionally, The Odyssey is playing in 45 sites exhibiting the 70MM print and 56 sites that have the 35MM print. Across Wave 1 markets, The Odyssey has the broadest possible PLF screen footprint including 4DX, D-Box, Dolby Vision and leading PLF formats.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs we told you, UK is typically the alpha territory for Nolan, and had the country advanced to the final game of the World Cup on Sunday, we could have seen a ding in ticket sales. With Spain and Argentina facing off Sunday, there seems to be less anxiety. Again, the outlook heading into this weekend was for a $200M worldwide start. Entertainment stat org JustWatch reports that \u201c60% of entertainment viewers say they plan to watch both\u00a0The Odyssey\u00a0on the big screen and the World Cup Final this weekend.\u201d This is after a survey of 3,210 people conducted between May-July 2026 across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and North America. <\/p>\n

\n\tHere\u2019s how the Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Tom Hollad, Jon Berthal, Charlize Theron ensemble went down abroad on Wednesday and Thursday:<\/p>\n

\n\tIn\u00a0France,\u00a0Nolan\u2019s latest reached close to $5M from 416K admissions, grossing $2.4M on Thursday from 228k admissions, +97% above\u00a0Oppenheimer\u2019s admissions on the same day.\u00a0No surprise, the pic\u00a0is the clear\u00a0No.1\u00a0<\/strong>title in the market with 40% share of total admissions.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn\u00a0Australia,\u00a0The Odyssey counts a running total of $3.7M through Friday. Thursday achieved the\u00a0biggest opening day for a non-superhero Nolan film\u00a0behind\u00a0The Dark Knight Rises, performing\u00a0+51% above Oppeneheimer\u00a0and +53% above\u00a0Dune: Part Two. This was also the\u00a0biggest opening day of the year, as well as the\u00a0sixth\u00a0biggest Universal opening day of all time.<\/p>\n

\n\tMuy arriba in Mexico\u00a0<\/strong>for The Odyssey with the biggest Thursday ever for a Nolan pic at $1.5M,\u00a0+70% above Oppenheimer. The Odyssey is No. 1 in the market with a 52% marketshare and 3x Toy Story 5. <\/p>\n
