In recent years, ris\u00ading aware\u00adness around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/blog\/generation-z-and-mental-health\" title=\"Gen Z and Mental Health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ado\u00adles\u00adcent emo\u00adtion\u00adal well-being<\/a> and more open con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtions about men\u00adtal health have encour\u00adaged increased support.<\/p>\n<p>Youth men\u00adtal health sta\u00adtis\u00adtics reveal a\u00a0trou\u00adbling pic\u00adture: Large num\u00adbers of ado\u00adles\u00adcents are report\u00ading symp\u00adtoms of anx\u00adi\u00adety, depres\u00adsion and stress-relat\u00aded con\u00addi\u00adtions. Pol\u00adi\u00adcy changes, shift\u00ading social norms, tele\u00adhealth access and school-based ser\u00advices save helped reduce stig\u00adma and may ulti\u00admate\u00adly improve access to care. Still, bar\u00adri\u00aders per\u00adsist, espe\u00adcial\u00adly among young peo\u00adple from low-income com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties, LGBTQ groups and youth of\u00a0color.<\/p>\n<p>Key Men\u00adtal Health Trends<\/p>\n<p>Progress is mixed accord\u00ading to the lat\u00adest youth men\u00adtal health sta\u00adtis\u00adtics. While some indi\u00adca\u00adtors reflect mod\u00adest improve\u00adments in recent years, oth\u00aders high\u00adlight increas\u00ades in report\u00aded men\u00adtal health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Over\u00adall, the lat\u00adest Nation\u00adal Sur\u00advey of Children\u2019s Health data reveal that near\u00adly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childhealthdata.org\/browse\/survey\/results?q=11087&amp;r=1&amp;g=1149\" title=\"mental, emotional, developmental or behavioral problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1\u00a0in 3 (31%) youth ages 12 to 17 had a\u00a0men\u00adtal, emo\u00adtion\u00adal, devel\u00adop\u00admen\u00adtal or behav\u00adioral prob\u00adlem<\/a> in 2022\u20132023, slight\u00adly high\u00ader than the pre\u00advi\u00adous 30% esti\u00admate. Sta\u00adtis\u00adtics for select\u00aded con\u00addi\u00adtions are pro\u00advid\u00aded\u00a0below.<\/p>\n<p>Depres\u00adsion<\/p>\n<p>Near\u00adly 1\u00a0in 5 (18%) youth ages 12 to 17 have had at least one major depres\u00adsive episode in the past year \u2014 about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/data-we-collect\/nsduh-national-survey-drug-use-and-health\/national-releases\/2023#annual-national-report\" title=\"Drug use and health national report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">4.5 mil\u00adlion ado\u00adles\u00adcents<\/a> \u2014 accord\u00ading to a\u00a02023 fed\u00ader\u00adal sur\u00advey. For instance, the lat\u00adest 2023 CDC Youth Risk Behav\u00adior Sur\u00advey found that <a href=\"https:\/\/yrbs-explorer.services.cdc.gov\/#\/graphs?questionCode=H26&amp;topicCode=C01&amp;location=XX&amp;year=2023\" title=\"high schoolers that report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2\u00a0in 5 (40%) high school\u00aders report per\u00adsis\u00adtent feel\u00adings of sad\u00adness or hope\u00adless\u00adness<\/a>, with rates par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly high for girls (53%) and LGBTQ+ youth (65%). While the 40% fig\u00adure for 2023 is a\u00a0slight improve\u00adment from 42% in 2021, the 10-year trend shows an alarm\u00ading 10 per\u00adcent\u00adage point spike from 30% in\u00a02013.<\/p>\n<p>Anx\u00adi\u00adety<\/p>\n<p>Anx\u00adi\u00adety remains among the most com\u00admon\u00adly report\u00aded men\u00adtal health con\u00adcerns, with <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/NHISDataQueryTool\/NHIS_TEEN\/index.html\" title=\"adolescents indicating they experienced symptoms of anxiety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">20% of U.S. ado\u00adles\u00adcents ages 12 to 17 indi\u00adcat\u00ading they expe\u00adri\u00adenced symp\u00adtoms of anx\u00adi\u00adety<\/a> (e.g., being both\u00adered by per\u00adsis\u00adtent wor\u00adry\u00ading or nervous\/\u200banxious feel\u00adings) in the past two weeks, based on a\u00a02021\u20132023 sur\u00advey. Anoth\u00ader nation\u00adal sur\u00advey found an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americashealthrankings.org\/learn\/reports\/2024-health-of-women-and-children-report\/findings-health-outcomes\" title=\"Health outcomes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">18% increase<\/a> between 2020\u20132021 and 2022\u20132023\u00a0in the share of young peo\u00adple ages 3\u00a0to 17 who were told by a\u00a0provider that they have an anx\u00adi\u00adety prob\u00adlem (9.1% to 10.7%).<\/p>\n<p>OCD<\/p>\n<p>Obses\u00adsive-com\u00adpul\u00adsive dis\u00ador\u00adder (OCD) affects approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 3% of youth, accord\u00ading to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/155\/3\/e2024068993\/200217\/Brief-Assessment-Tools-for-Obsessive-Compulsive\" title=\"OCD Assessment Tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2025 Pedi\u00adatrics jour\u00adnal arti\u00adcle<\/a>. Dur\u00ading the COVID-19 pan\u00addem\u00adic, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10706205\/\" title=\"OCD prevalence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OCD preva\u00adlence increased, and symp\u00adtoms wors\u00adened for ado\u00adles\u00adcents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>PTSD<\/p>\n<p>Post-trau\u00admat\u00adic stress dis\u00ador\u00adder (PTSD) con\u00adtin\u00adues to impact youth exposed to com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty vio\u00adlence, abuse, nat\u00adur\u00adal dis\u00adas\u00adters or oth\u00ader trau\u00admat\u00adic events. The <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/148\/2\/e2021052580\/179745\/Trauma-Informed-Care\" title=\"American Academy of Pediatrics article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Acad\u00ade\u00admy of Pedi\u00adatrics<\/a> reports that near\u00adly half of young peo\u00adple under age 18 have expe\u00adri\u00adenced one such event in ear\u00adly child\u00adhood. Stud\u00adies esti\u00admate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK559140\/\" title=\"prevalence of PTSD by age 18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">preva\u00adlence of PTSD by age 18<\/a> at about 8%, accord\u00ading to a\u00a02024 book on this con\u00addi\u00adtion. Sup\u00adport for youth after trau\u00adma is crit\u00adi\u00adcal, as it can increase or reduce the like\u00adli\u00adhood of devel\u00adop\u00ading\u00a0PTSD.<\/p>\n<p>Sui\u00adcide and Self-Harm<\/p>\n<p>Sui\u00adcide remains a\u00a0lead\u00ading cause of death among ado\u00adles\u00adcents. In 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/children-mental-health\/data-research\/index.html\" title=\"Children mental health data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1\u00a0in 5 (20%) U.S. high school\u00aders report\u00aded seri\u00adous\u00adly con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading sui\u00adcide<\/a>, and 9% report\u00aded attempt\u00ading sui\u00adcide in the past year. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, though, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.childhealthdata.org\/browse\/survey\/results?q=11114&amp;r=1&amp;g=1149\" title=\"youth having difficulty getting mental health care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">major\u00adi\u00adty (54%) of U.S. youth ages 12 to 17 still have dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty get\u00adting need\u00aded men\u00adtal health care<\/a>, accord\u00ading to the lat\u00adest Nation\u00adal Sur\u00advey of Children\u2019s Health data in 2022\u20132023. This fig\u00adure wors\u00adened slight\u00adly from 52% in 2021\u20132022.<\/p>\n<p>Among ado\u00adles\u00adcents who expe\u00adri\u00adenced a\u00a0major depres\u00adsive episode in the past year and arguably are in seri\u00adous need of treat\u00adment, 40% still did not receive men\u00adtal health care, as report\u00aded by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt47095\/National%20Report\/National%20Report\/2023-nsduh-annual-national.htm#mhtx1b\" title=\"2023 federal survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2023 fed\u00ader\u00adal sur\u00advey<\/a>. The most com\u00admon rea\u00adson youth say they don\u2019t receive care? They think they should be able to han\u00addle their issues on their own (report\u00aded by 85%). Oth\u00ader com\u00admon rea\u00adsons include: wor\u00adry\u00ading about what peo\u00adple will think if they get help; wor\u00adry\u00ading about their pri\u00adva\u00adcy; think\u00ading treat\u00adment won\u2019t help; not know\u00ading how to get care; and think\u00ading no one would care if they got better.<\/p>\n<p>Many schools are strug\u00adgling to meet the grow\u00ading men\u00adtal health needs of young peo\u00adple. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/surveys\/spp\/results.asp#mentalhealth-march25\" title=\"Mental health surveys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2024\u20132025<\/a> sur\u00advey from the Nation\u00adal Cen\u00adter for Edu\u00adca\u00adtion Sta\u00adtis\u00adtics found\u00a0that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just over half (53%) of pub\u00adlic schools report\u00aded a\u00a0rise in the share of stu\u00addents seek\u00ading school-based men\u00adtal health ser\u00advices com\u00adpared to the pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00a0year.<\/li>\n<li>But only 52% of pub\u00adlic schools said they are effec\u00adtive in pro\u00advid\u00ading men\u00adtal health ser\u00advices to all stu\u00addents in\u00a0need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Com\u00admon <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12013806\/\" title=\"barriers schools face\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bar\u00adri\u00aders schools face<\/a> in pro\u00advid\u00ading ser\u00advices include inad\u00ade\u00adquate fund\u00ading, a\u00a0lack of qual\u00adi\u00adfied men\u00adtal health care providers and a\u00a0need for more trained school staff to sup\u00adport stu\u00addents with emo\u00adtion\u00adal health chal\u00adlenges, among oth\u00ader chal\u00adlenges.
