Kathy Hochul\u2019s one-year ban on new construction of high-powered data centers<\/a> in the state, calling it counterproductive and anti-commerce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/14\/us-news\/hochul-orders-election-year-pause-on-new-large-scale-data-centers-to-power-ai-in-ny\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hochul signed an executive order <\/a>last week enacting a one-year statewide moratorium on new \u201chyperscale\u201d data centers that need at least 50 megawatts of power to run on, arguing the delay was needed for the state to introduce the centers with care.<\/p>\n<p>But Steve Fulop, CEO of the Partnership for the City of New York \u2014 which represents the largest 300 firms in the city, including those from Wall Street and the broader financial services industry \u2014 said the move would leave New York behind other states in the AI boom. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.47126437;display:block\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40032269\" width=\"868\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/signed-executive-order-pause-construction-134358796_04c2bc.jpg\" alt=\"Governor Kathy Hochul signing an executive order to pause AI data center construction, with Julie Tighe, State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, and Coner Eckert in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-40032269\"  \/>Gov. Mango for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, the solution is going to be whether data centers get built or they don\u2019t get built,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fo\/eogvxxfu1xzc2yzt64qyc\/h?dl=0&amp;e=2&amp;preview=Steve+Fulop+RAW+7-16-26.mp3&amp;rlkey=qzlctkjtfi9dyfnl2rrs08si0&amp;st=d0a211zw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fulop\u00a0<\/a>said Sunday on 77 WABC\u2019s \u201cCats Roundtable\u201d program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe signal when you put a moratorium on this sort of stuff \u2026 is that it becomes a riskier proposition to put your money into New York versus maybe another state,\u201d he told host John Catsimatidis.<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cIt sends a signal about our competitiveness to the private sector. Other states like Pennsylvania \u2026 continue to grow, and they haven\u2019t put a moratorium on [data centers]. They work with the communities to find solutions. A one-year procrastination or delay doesn\u2019t solve anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York City also wants to be a leader in emerging artificial intelligence, and supporters say data centers are needed to accomplish that.<\/p>\n<p>The governor defended her one-year freeze \u2014 which immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/15\/us-news\/trump-skewers-hochuls-ban-of-data-centers-in-ny-terrible-decision\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drew a rebuke from President Trump<\/a> \u2014 on Sunday as the right approach.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed local governments aren\u2019t equipped to negotiate with the Big tech companies on an ad hoc basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state has to take the lead. We have to get it right,\u201d Hochul said on CBS News\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation\u201d program.<\/p>\n<p>There are 30 pending applications to build data centers in the state, which she referred to as \u201cflooding the zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a huge tax on our [energy] grid. I want to make sure the power is there for the large companies creating jobs,\u201d Hochul said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers want protection; there\u2019s a lot of anxiety. Companies want certainty. Kristen Gonzalez, a DSA member who reps parts of Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn, said last week.<\/p>\n<p>New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman \u2014 who supports data-center industry expansion \u2014 accused Hochul of backing the moratorium because she thinks it\u2019ll score her political capital with the far left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKathy Hochul will always put the interests of [New York City Mayor] Zohran Mamdani and big-government socialists ahead of New Yorkers, even if it means blocking economic opportunity while families struggle under the nation\u2019s highest taxes and utility bills,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u2019s team insisted her decision was not tied to politics or her re-election campaign.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York City\u2019s top business advocacy group slammed Gov.
