(Bernama pic)
PETALING JAYA: Run 1km. Push a weighted sled. Run again. Row, carry, lunge and repeat until 8km and eight punishing workout stations are behind you.

That is Hyrox, the fitness race steadily turning Malaysian gym-goers into competitors.

Part endurance event and part strength challenge, the standardised global race has attracted growing interest among people looking for something more structured than an ordinary workout.

Its profile is expected to rise further when Kuala Lumpur hosts Malaysia’s first Hyrox event in December.

Professional athlete and performance coach Aymarn Annuar said the format appeals to Malaysians because it gives familiar gym exercises a clear purpose.

“Hyrox is gaining popularity because it combines running with strength training,” the 37-year-old told Bernama. “It presents a new challenge, and Malaysians generally enjoy taking on challenges.”

Unlike obstacle-course races, the event takes place in a controlled indoor setting and follows the same basic format wherever it is held.

Participants complete eight 1km runs, with each followed by a functional fitness station. These include movements such as sled pushes and pulls, rowing, weighted carries, lunges and wall-ball throws.

The combination demands cardiovascular fitness, strength and the mental discipline to keep moving as fatigue builds.

Yet Aymarn stressed that Hyrox is not reserved for elite athletes: more gyms are now offering structured classes for members who want to prepare for a race, giving recreational exercisers a goal beyond simply becoming fitter.

“Going to the gym is already part of many people’s routines, but Hyrox allows them to work towards competing after completing structured training,” he said.

Beginners can train for Hyrox at a manageable pace, building confidence and fitness before attempting a solo, doubles or relay race. (Bernama pic)

Malaysian participation has already become noticeable at regional events. More than 1,000 Malaysians reportedly competed at a recent race in Jakarta, while growing numbers have also travelled to Singapore to take part.

Women are increasingly joining the community too, Aymarn said. Competitors can enter solo, with a partner in the doubles category, or as part of a relay team.

For first-timers, he recommends doubles or relay, which allow the workload to be shared and make the event less daunting.

Professional Hyrox athlete Saddam Pittli began competing only in June 2024 after a friend introduced him to the sport. The 35-year-old has since taken part in about 30 races in several countries.

He believes much of the sport’s appeal lies in its ability to accommodate people with different levels of experience.

“Many people feel they are not fit enough, but if you wait until you are fit, you may never start,” he said.

“Most of my friends began without much interest or training. After trying it once, they continued, stayed active and set their own goals.”

The exercises may look gruelling, but many are based on movements people already perform in daily life, such as pushing, lifting and carrying heavy objects.

That familiarity can make Hyrox feel more approachable than highly technical competitive sports, even though completing a race still requires careful preparation.

The weighted sled push is among Hyrox’s most demanding stations, requiring strength, stamina and the determination to keep moving under fatigue. (Bernama pic)

Before signing up

Beginners should first build a reasonable running base and become comfortable performing the workout movements with proper technique.

Rather than training at maximum intensity every day, they should gradually combine endurance runs, strength sessions and race-style workouts.

Recovery is equally important, particularly as the repetitive running and loaded movements can place considerable strain on the knees, lower back and shoulders.

Those with existing medical conditions or injuries should seek professional advice before beginning an intensive programme.

For many participants, finishing time is not the only measure of success. Training provides structure, race day creates a shared challenge, and completing the course offers a tangible reward for months of effort.

That may explain why so many first-timers return: Hyrox gives ordinary workouts a destination – and Malaysians are increasingly willing to run, push and lunge their way towards it.

Hyrox challenges competitors to alternate between running and functional exercises, with the rowing station testing both endurance and…

[38
10932,1198,192057,13160,210,10930,8371,1236,5841,67,132,68
post-948975","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-endurance","tag-fitness","tag-functional-training","tag-gym","tag-health","tag-hyrox","tag-kuala-lumpur","tag-running","tag-strength-training","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us
["GET
