In continuance from their salaries, pensioners receive a dedicated percentage of their pension to mitigate inflation. However, this component, known as Dearness Allowance (DA) in salary, is called Dearness Relief (DR) in pension.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/8th-pay-commission-key-pension-revision-demands-dearness-relief-hike-fitment-factor-calculate-age-based-enhance-gratuity-11783247075560.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"DR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DR<\/a> is often paid to retired central and state government employees, railways and defence personnel, public sector staff, and bank employees across the country. The private sector does not offer the same for employees or <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/da-hike-punjab-himachal-pradesh-west-bengal-kerala-full-list-states-considering-dearness-allowance-employees-pensioners-11784457148727.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"pensioners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pensioners<\/a>. Here&#8217;s all you need to know:<\/p>\n<p>Are DA and DR calculations similar?<\/p>\n<p>As a component of the monthly salary, DA is revised biannually based on the 12-month average of the All-India Consumer Price Index (<a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/dearness-allowance-how-2-pc-da-hike-calculate-explained-aicpi-india-consumer-price-index-12-month-average-pay-commission-11780633330015.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"AICPI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AICPI<\/a>), with announcements in early March and October, followed by rollouts in January and July. Notably, each time DA is adjusted or revised by the pay commission, a similar change is reflected in DR accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>DR impacts the in-hand <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/atal-pension-yojana-apy-how-open-account-bank-savings-aadhaar-eligibility-indian-pension-scheme-payout-top-faqs-answered-11784308985878.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"pension\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pension <\/a>payout for retired central government staff who receive an individual or family pension from the government. Under the 7th CPC, there have been 10 hikes since 2021, with the highest at 11% in July 2021. Further, DA is not paid to pensioners when they reside in a foreign country during re-<a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/world-malady-rising-inequality-low-employment-hnis-11783873975567.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"employment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">employment<\/a>. But pensioners residing abroad without being re-employed are eligible to get DA on their pension.<\/p>\n<p>8th CPC: Key pension-related demands<\/p>\n<p>The National Council \u2014 Joint Consultative Machinery (<a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/8th-pay-commission-cpc-why-nc-jcm-demand-employee-levels-combined-pay-scale-merger-proposal-explained-salary-hike-matrix-11784464357324.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"NC-JCM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NC-JCM<\/a>), Maharashtra Old Pension Organisation and All India Defence Employees Federation (AIDEF) have made detailed submissions to the commission. In May, the Indian Banks&#8217; Association (IBA) also announced revised <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/8th-pay-commission-aidef-seeks-review-of-da-and-dr-inflation-formula-to-better-reflect-living-costs-11782181965220.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"DA and DR\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DA and DR<\/a> for workmen and officer employees across levels for the months of May, June and July 2026. It hiked basic salaries between  \u20b948,000 and  \u20b91,17,000 and DA from  \u20b9435 to  \u20b91,050. Notably, since DA is connected to cost-of-living, the amount for state government <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/new-labour-code-salary-must-be-paid-by-7th-of-next-month-what-employees-should-know-11784615417408.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"employees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">employees <\/a>differs depending on their work location and can vary depending on the area being urban, rural or semi-urban.<\/p>\n<p>The latest being West <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/money\/personal-finance\/west-bengal-govt-release-50-pc-dr-dearness-relief-arrears-estimate-pensioners-kolkata-metro-area-pension-disburse-banks-11783595684533.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Bengal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bengal<\/a>, which hiked DA by 20% last month with effect from October, taking the component to 38% of basic salary. Prior to this, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh each approved 2% hikes, while Bihar implemented 2% hike for staff under the 7th pay commission, 5% hike for employees under 6th CPC and 9% for staff under 5th CPC.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Maharashtra greenlit payment of  \u20b9800 crore DA arrears under the 5th, 6th and 7th CPCs for November and December 2025, and January 2026; and 2% DR hike for retired All India Services officers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pensioners in India include retired government employees eligible for individual or family pension from the government.
