[Photo: National Battle of the Bands]

Cue the drumline and sound the trumpets — in August 2027, the Pepsi National Battle of the Bands (NBOTB) is moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area after calling Houston home since 2014. The event, which showcases top marching bands from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), will bring the artistry and tradition of their music to AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

[Photo: National Battle of the Bands]

“I’m excited about the opportunity to introduce the Pepsi National Battle of the Bands to an entirely new audience while continuing to celebrate everything that makes HBCU marching bands so special,” Derek Webber, CEO of Webber Marketing and creator of the National Battle of the Bands, told Dallas Innovates.

Webber said the new location is the next right move for the event. “One thing we’ve always believed is that HBCU culture deserves to be experienced on the biggest stages,” he said. “Dallas gives us the opportunity to do that while introducing even more people to the excellence of HBCU institutions and their students.”

He pointed to the fact that Dallas is one of the “fastest-growing regions in the country” with a “strong sports culture, a vibrant business community and a large network of HBCU alumni and supporters” who will be eager to show up for the performers. He said that AT&T Stadium’s international fame as a venue will only increase the visibility for these bands.

And visibility is crucial. Monica Paul, executive director of the Dallas Sports Commission, said in a press release from the NBOTB that the event is a “celebration of culture, community, education and excellence that will bring thousands of visitors to our region while showcasing the energy and vibrancy of Dallas on a national stage.”

Bringing in the money

While all the brass and sequins are flashy and exciting enough, the NBOTB is about a lot more than the polished, impressive formations on the field. The event, which celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, has awarded more than $2.4 million in scholarships to participating universities.

In fact, despite its name, the event isn’t exactly a baton-twirling “battle” at all. Instead of judges and awards, it’s a presentation of the talent that only gets a 10- to 15-minute spotlight at any given football game halftime. Marching band enthusiasts and HBCU alumni alike get a three-plus-hour epic concert — without any football interrupting the real action.

[Photo: National Battle of the Bands]

“Our focus has always been on celebrating the excellence, artistry and traditions of HBCU marching bands rather than determining a winner,” Webber told Dallas Innovates. He added that sometimes media outlets “may host fan polls as a fun way to engage the community, but those are independent of the event itself.”

Appreciating HBCU musicians

In the end, Webber said the real show is watching the musicians put all of their training and dedication out on the field. He added that these students balance their performance, travel and practice schedule with a full slate of academics, adding to the impressive scale of their achievements.

“When people watch an HBCU marching band, they’re seeing much more than entertainment,” he said. “They’re seeing discipline, leadership, creativity, teamwork and a tradition that’s been passed down from one generation to the next. That’s what makes it so special.”

The NBOTB will be on August 27, 2027, with details on participating bands, ticket information and programming available in the coming months.

Don’t miss what’s next.
