WASHINGTON \u2014 Approximately 400 non-citizens cast ballots illegally in New Jersey elections since 2023 after more than 6,000 were wrongly added to the Garden State\u2019s voter rolls, Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill admitted Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Despite the mortifying disclosure, Sherrill managed to take a swipe at President Trump when asked about the possibility of him using\u00a0New Jersey as an example of vulnerable elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that Donald Trump has done more to undermine free elections in this country than certainly anyone in my lifetime, including [Russian President] Vladimir Putin,\u201d claimed the governor, adding that the president\u00a0\u201chas zero credibility on the issue of election integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill admits 6,000 non-citizens were registered to vote in the state due to an error. USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect<\/p>\n In a prime-time address to the nation last week, Trump claimed nearly 250,000 non-citizens were registered to vote<\/a> in California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, with up to\u00a035,152 wrongly enrolled in the Garden State.\u00a0<\/p>\n Sherrill confirmed Tuesday she had received a letter from the\u00a0Department of Homeland Security quoting that same figure and claimed that \u201cwe have asked them for any evidence of this, where they got that number, who this is. We\u2019ve received nothing back yet.\u201d<\/p>\n The voting snafu stemmed from a software screwup at the\u00a0New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, which automatically registered\u00a0around 6,600 non-Americans to vote between June 2023 and June 2024.<\/p>\n Despite applicants for driver\u2019s licenses or ID cards\u00a0indicating\u00a0\u201cno\u201d on a keypad when asked if they were citizens, the system recorded them as eligible to vote anyway.<\/p>\n The roughly 400 people who illegally voted were\u00a0\u201cregistered as Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters and were scattered across the state,\u201d said Sherrill, who added that \u201cwe have no evidence at this time that any elections were swayed.\u201d<\/p>\n A polling station in New Jersey on Oct. 26, 2025.
