JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 After a recent video by News4JAX traffic anchor Sophia Vitello on problems along 103rd Street, Sophia heard loud and clear from viewers who said another roadway deserves the spotlight even more: Moncrief Road.<\/p>\n

One comment\u2014calling Moncrief \u201cthe worst road in Jacksonville\u201d\u2014racked up 257 likes, and she decided to see what people who live and travel the corridor think is really going on, and what is being done to make it safer.<\/p>\n

A comment, a challenge, and a route on Google Maps<\/p>\n

Sophia did what many viewers suggested: she plugged Moncrief Road into Google Maps and hit start.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorstest road in Jacksonville\u201d<\/p>\n

Once on Moncrief, Sophia asked residents directly: Is it really the worst road in town?<\/p>\n

One man didn\u2019t hesitate. \u201cI think it\u2019s the worstest road in Jacksonville,\u201d he told her, adding that the danger he sees goes beyond potholes and lane markings.<\/p>\n

When Sophia asked whether the bigger issue was crime or crashes, he said crime was the main concern\u2014and that the community needs to feel like someone cares. He also pushed back on the area\u2019s reputation, saying Moncrief gets \u201ca bad rap\u201d and that people \u201cpre-judge\u201d what they don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook around\u2026 it\u2019s clear\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophia asked why some residents feel their neighborhood doesn\u2019t get the same attention as other parts of Jacksonville.<\/p>\n

The response was blunt: \u201cNow look around\u2026 it\u2019s clear.\u201d It was a moment that underscored what she heard repeatedly\u2014frustration that improvements seem to happen elsewhere, while Moncrief\u2019s needs linger.<\/p>\n

Another resident said the road itself could use upgrades, including new pavement.<\/p>\n

What the city is doing: roundabouts first<\/p>\n

Sophia found that the city is looking into improvements on Moncrief Road, starting with roundabouts\u2014including one at 45th Street and another planned at New Kings Road.<\/p>\n

But residents raised concerns that redesigns won\u2019t matter if basic pedestrian safety isn\u2019t addressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo crosswalk there\u2026 no crosswalk there\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

At one four-way intersection, Sophia pointed out a problem that was hard to miss: no marked crosswalks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a four-way intersection,\u201d she said, noting the absence of crosswalks in multiple directions. For people walking in the area, residents told her that can mean there\u2019s effectively nowhere safe to cross.<\/p>\n

A community asking to be heard<\/p>\n

Sophia said what she found on Moncrief Road wasn\u2019t just complaints\u2014it was a community \u201ccrying to be heard,\u201d watching work happen in other neighborhoods and asking why similar urgency hasn\u2019t shown up here.<\/p>\n

One resident summed it up with a call to action: the neighborhood needs to come together to \u201cclean it up\u201d and \u201cbuild it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Study on Moncrief Road<\/p>\n
