So when I do strength train, I like to turn to exercises that maximize payoffs in the shortest amount of time. I often wonder, \u201cIf I only do a single strength exercise, which one should it be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovid.com\/jnls\/cjsportsmed\/abstract\/10.1097\/jsm.0000000000001370~strength-and-flexibility-self-assessment-and-subsequent\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ovid.com\/jnls\/cjsportsmed\/abstract\/10.1097\/jsm.0000000000001370~strength-and-flexibility-self-assessment-and-subsequent\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> of marathon runners, published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, provides at least some of that answer.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Before we get into the research, let\u2019s confirm why we need strength workouts in the first place. (I always love the reminder!)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Strength training has been shown to improve running performance, particularly when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a46575383\/strength-training-running-economy-study\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a46575383\/strength-training-running-economy-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running economy\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running economy<\/a>, or how fast you can run using a given amount of oxygen. (Translation: It helps you run faster with less effort because it makes you more efficient.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Beyond running gains, strength workouts also help preserve and <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/57\/18\/1211\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/57\/18\/1211\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"build muscle mass\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">build muscle mass<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/54\/6\/341\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/54\/6\/341\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"support metabolic and cardiac health\" data-node-id=\"6.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">support metabolic and cardiac health<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/inm.70054\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/inm.70054\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety\" data-node-id=\"6.5\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety<\/a>. While research is mixed on strength training to prevent running injuries, it can help shore up weak spots, like the glutes or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71179402\/signs-of-weak-calves\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71179402\/signs-of-weak-calves\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"calves\" data-node-id=\"6.7\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calves<\/a>, and science links these weaknesses to running-related injuries.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">To help you build strength where you need it most and sidestep aches and pains, one exercise appears to offer greater benefits than others.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"8.0\">The Best Strength Move for Runners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">To figure out the must-do move for runners, researchers followed 867 participants training for the New York City Marathon. Sixteen weeks before the race, runners performed a series of self-assessment exercises at home to test their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a61560834\/strength-workouts-for-runners\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a61560834\/strength-workouts-for-runners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a44362124\/flexibility-exercises\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a44362124\/flexibility-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"flexibility\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">flexibility<\/a>, including a sit-and-reach test, side planks, single-leg glute bridges, heel raises, and push-ups.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Throughout marathon training, researchers tracked which runners developed overuse injuries, and about 36 percent of participants got one. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/author\/471523\/heather-milton\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/author\/471523\/heather-milton\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Heather Milton\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Heather Milton<\/a>, CSCS, a clinical exercise physiologist and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/strongerwithscience.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/strongerwithscience.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Stronger With Science\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Stronger With Science<\/a>, says this percentage is in line with published injury rates\u2014between 30 and 50 percent\u2014among marathon runners.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Based on the series of exercises the marathoners did before they started training, researchers concluded that the only move that predicted their injury risk was the single-leg glute bridge: Runners who could hold the position for at least 20 seconds had anywhere between 49 and 64 percent lower risk of injury, compared with runners who could only hold the position for nine seconds or fewer.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cResearchers found that only the single-leg glute bridge test was negatively correlated with injury,\u201d Milton explains. \u201cMeaning, the better the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71201449\/run-improving-activation-exercises\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71201449\/run-improving-activation-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"glute strength\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">glute strength<\/a>, the lower the injury rates were in that sample of runners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"13.0\">The Benefits of Single-Leg Glute Bridges for Runners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The single-leg bridge tests more than just glute strength. \u201cThe single-leg glute bridge exercise assesses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a40820202\/pelvic-floor-workout\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a40820202\/pelvic-floor-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"pelvic stability\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pelvic stability<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71887463\/muscular-fatigue-resistance-workouts-runners\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71887463\/muscular-fatigue-resistance-workouts-runners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscular endurance\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">muscular endurance<\/a> of the gluteus max and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a40862512\/gluteus-medius\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a40862512\/gluteus-medius\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"medius\" data-node-id=\"14.5\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">medius<\/a> muscles,\u201d Milton says. \u201cThese muscles are imperative to withstand the impact of running step after step, as well as to maintain proper alignment of the pelvis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">According to Milton, if these muscles are weak or fatigue quickly, it\u2019s likely a runner will not be able to maintain proper running form. The resulting poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71005190\/guide-to-running-form-program\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a71005190\/guide-to-running-form-program\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"biomechanics\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">biomechanics<\/a> can ultimately lead to a greater risk of injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"16.0\">How to Do a Single-Leg Glute Bridge Hold<\/strong><img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"single leg glute bridge for hip flexor relief\" title=\"single leg glute bridge for hip flexor relief\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3000\" height=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/single-leg-glute-bridge197-6451260a7ef08.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1ddfba50\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Thomas Hengge<\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"18.0\">Lie faceup with arms straight by sides. Bring feet hip-width apart, approximately six inches away from fingertips.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"18.1\">Place fingertips on hip bones to maintain alignment and lift hips off the ground, engaging glutes. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"18.2\">Keeping hips high and level, straighten out one leg. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"18.3\">Hold this position for as long as you can, up to 30 seconds. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"18.4\">Note how many seconds until hips drop or hamstring cramps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"19.0\">Single-Leg Glute Bridge Variations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Milton uses two versions of the single-leg glute bridge with her clients, depending on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a69664256\/achieve-running-goals-with-training-plan\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/training\/a69664256\/achieve-running-goals-with-training-plan\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"training goal\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">training goal<\/a>. She typically suggests doing these moves two to three days per week, on nonconsecutive days.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udcaaTo Enhance Hip Stability and Endurance<\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"22.0\">Hold the position described above for longer, up to 90 seconds per side. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"22.1\">Do at least 3 sets per side.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\ud83c\udfcb\ufe0f\u200d\u2640\ufe0fTo Build More Strength<\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"24.0\">Use the same setup as described above, but place a dumbbell across the working hip. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"24.1\">Lift and lower hips, driving grounded foot into the floor, and holding for 1-3 seconds at the top. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"24.2\">Repeat for 8-12 reps before switching sides. <\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal;\" data-node-id=\"24.3\">Do 3 sets.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"body-tip css-1l40jj4 emevuu60\">Keep in mind that if this exercise feels difficult, it doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a71038631\/running-injury-misconceptions\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a71038631\/running-injury-misconceptions\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"headed for injury\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-rgqwc2 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">headed for injury<\/a>. But depending on how challenging it is, it can indicate weaker muscle groups. The key is to start slowly and gradually increase the duration of your single-leg glute bridge hold and how frequently you perform the exercise.
