PHILADELPHIA\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Left-hander Justin Wrobleski<\/a> plans to give Clayton Kershaw<\/a> a call. <\/p>\n

Wrobleski has long spoken highly of Kershaw\u2019s impact on him as a teammate. But as Wrobleski charts his way past his career high in innings at any level, he needs some extra advice from the three-time Cy Young winner. <\/p>\n

\u201cTrying to figure out how he did it for so long, throwing 200 a year,\u201d Wrobleski said after holding the Phillies to one run through 6 \u2153 innings in the Dodgers\u2019 2-1 win<\/a> Tuesday. \u201cThis is something I\u2019ve been thinking about the past couple days. \u2026 I think it\u2019s something that could be helpful moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wrobleski\u2019s workload is something manager Dave Roberts<\/a> is thinking about, too.<\/p>\n

Every year, teams across Major League Baseball claim that they have their sights set on the World Series. But the Dodgers<\/a> have made that pilgrimage through October so routine, and have leveraged their financial might to assemble such a deep roster, that the extra month of play weighs more heavily on their midseason decisions than it does for any other club.<\/p>\n

Yes, the Dodgers want to claim the best regular-season record in the majors. But they also know how vital it is to peak in health and performance at the right time. Part of that puzzle is managing workload for young pitchers who are poised to be major postseason contributors.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Wrobleski\u2019s] obviously a huge piece of what we\u2019re doing and what we\u2019re going to be doing,\u201d Roberts said before the Dodgers\u2019 win. <\/p>\n

The Dodgers pulled out the victory on a game-ending 5-2-6-4 double play when the Phillies\u2019 J.T. Realmuto was thrown out running back to second base \u2014 instead of staying on third \u2014 after Justin Crawford was caught in a rundown.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously with the six-man [rotation] that we\u2019re kind of beholden to for this whole season, I think that\u2019s helped,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cAnd each outing, just manage how he\u2019s looking, how he\u2019s feeling, and a lot of conversations that we have. But yeah, we\u2019re still looking out to play through October, so got to be mindful of the workload.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wrobleski reached the 100-inning mark in his last start before the All-Star break \u2014 and then recorded five strikeouts in his first Midsummer Classic, on his 26th birthday no less. He\u2019s on pace to reach a career high in innings (at any level) in his next three starts. <\/p>\n

Wrobleski will blow past the 123 \u2153 innings he threw last year between triple-A, the majors and the postseason. But his overall workload last year could be considered a little higher than the innings count, factoring pitches thrown on backfields and work to stay ready during the playoffs before making his postseason debut in the World Series. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, they\u2019re going to do what\u2019s best for me in my career, and I trust this organization and these people,\u201d Wrobleski said. \u201cSo my job\u2019s always to go out there and give them whatever they need from me that day and pitch until they take the ball away from me. And today that was 6 1\/3, and we\u2019ll see where that goes the rest of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, Wrobleski has thrown the second-most innings of any Dodger, behind only Yoshinobu Yamamoto<\/a> (119 \u2154). There\u2019s a wide gap before No. 3 on that list, Emmet Sheehan<\/a> (87 2\/3).<\/p>\n

The Dodgers have two avenues to subtly ease Wrobleski\u2019s workload, when merited, through number of starts and through pitches within a start.<\/p>\n

Even with Shohei Ohtani<\/a> (left knee irritation) out of the rotation indefinitely, the Dodgers want to keep their starting pitchers on a six- to seven-day rotation. That will naturally cut down on innings, compared to pitching on regular rest.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Roberts didn\u2019t take the ball from Wrobleski until after the first out in the seventh inning, a deep start, but he was efficient enough that his pitch count was only up to 89.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought he pitched well enough to put us in a position to win the game,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cI\u2019ve got all the confidence in Justin, as everyone knows, as he knows. But I wasn\u2019t about to let him lose that game. I thought the stuff was starting to falter a little bit, as far as the command. If you can curb some stressful pitches here or there, I think it\u2019s smart. It\u2019s always good when it works out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Muncy milestone<\/p>\n

Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy\u2019s<\/a> two-run home run gave the Dodgers the lead in the fourth inning. It was his 228th home run as a Dodger, tied with Ron Cey<\/a> for No. 5 on the franchise all-time list (No. 2 since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles).<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really, really cool,\u201d Muncy said. \u201cI always say, any time you\u2019re on any type of leaderboard when it comes to this organization, you\u2019ve done something right. So for me, that means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wild finish<\/p>\n

Closer Tanner Scott<\/a> recorded a five-out save to seal the victory on a wild double play that included a pickle between third and home.<\/p>\n

With one out and runners on second and third, Scott got the Phillies\u2019 Brandon Marsh to chase an inside fastball and hit a soft grounder to Muncy at third. <\/p>\n

By the time Muncy fielded it cleanly, both Phillies baserunners, Crawford and Realmuto, had taken large leads off their respective bases.<\/p>\n

Muncy ran after Crawford to catch him in a rundown. And just before shortstop Mookie Betts<\/a> tagged out Crawford on his way back to third, Realmuto inexplicably left third base to return to second.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s like the first time I\u2019ve yelled on the field,\u201d Scott said. \u201cI was like, \u2018Mookie, two!\u2019 Crazy play.\u201d <\/p>\n

Betts fired to second, and second baseman Tommy Edman tagged out Realmuto to end the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the work you put in pregame and from the start of the season, you hope that kicks in, just instincts,\u201d Muncy said. \u201cThat\u2019s where the experience really matters in those types of situations.
