\u201cHappy Gilmore 2\u201d might be a glimpse into the future of professional golf.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The PGA Tour and LIV Golf have agreed to unify<\/a>, but more than two years after shaking hands, discussions between the two leagues have stalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, in Adam Sandler\u2019s long-awaited sequel, a major storyline bears resemblance to the friction that has plagued the professional golf world over the past few years. The fictitious Maxi Golf Tour is a rival circuit aiming to make \u201cregular golf\u201d defunct with monster drives and mini-golf-style holes. In many ways, it feels like a nod to LIV.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yet, in the film, PGA Tour stars Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy\u2014along with LIV stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka\u2014are all rallying to save the regular tour.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just wanted to make some sort of reason that they\u2019re all together,\u201d Sandler told Front Office Sports<\/a> of the PGA Tour and LIV divide. \u201cThey\u2019re all on the same team, all pulling for the same thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

How was Sandler able to get everyone to participate?\u00a0<\/p>\n

He reached out to Chad Mumm, cofounder and president of Pro Shop Holdings and the executive producer of Netflix\u2019s Full Swing, who has a direct relationship with many of the world\u2019s top golfers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was not like one or two cameos\u2014this is like 27,\u201d Mumm told FOS, \u00a0recalling when he first read the script.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The players were more than cameos, though. They were an integral part of the movie. Therefore, it took some \u201ccajoling,\u201d Mumm said, to get them to participate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to make sure we didn\u2019t get in the way of their lives,\u201d Sandler said. \u201cWe just tried to write stuff that we thought they\u2019d have a good time doing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It appears they did. And being together again\u2014albeit on-screen\u2014fighting for a common cause might be a signal that the rift in pro golf is mended, and they all just want to regularly play against each other again. <\/p>\n
