JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. <\/strong> \u2013 The Jacksonville Beach Police Department is kicking off a new education and enforcement campaign targeting electric motorcycles and electric bicycles \u2014 and officers want riders and parents to know the rules before they hit the road.<\/p>\n

Not all electric bikes are created equal<\/p>\n

Traffic Sgt. Brian Wallace says the distinction between an e-bike and an electric motorcycle matters \u2014 and gets overlooked more than people might think.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore we begin, it\u2019s important to understand that not every electric-powered, two-wheel vehicle is legally considered an e-bike,\u201d Wallace said. \u201cIf a vehicle can travel faster than 28 miles per hour, produces more than 750 watts power or lacks functional pedals, it is classified as an electric motorcycle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Electric motorcycles require a proper endorsement and registration before they can be legally operated on public roadways.<\/p>\n

Education comes first<\/p>\n

Patrol Cpl. Dustin Kling says the department\u2019s approach leads with awareness, not punishment.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is education first,\u201d Kling said. \u201cFor an initial violation, riders can generally expect a documented warning along with education for both the rider and, when appropriate, their parent or guardian.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Kling made clear that repeated or serious violations carry real consequences \u2014 including traffic citations, criminal charges when applicable, and towing and storage fees.<\/p>\n

Parents face responsibility, too<\/p>\n

Wallace says parents and guardians are not off the hook if their child is riding illegally.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlorida Statute 322.35 prohibits knowingly causing or permitting an unauthorized minor to operate a motor vehicle on the roadways of this state,\u201d Wallace said. \u201cOnce a parent or guardian has been warned, continued violations may result in criminal citations, towing, and storage fees.\u201d<\/p>\n

How to get informed<\/p>\n

The department has created an informational pamphlet that officers will distribute during their patrols. The pamphlet is also available on all Jacksonville Beach Police Department social media platforms.<\/p>\n

For riders still unsure whether their vehicle qualifies as an e-bike or an electric motorcycle, Wallace urged them to reach out before riding.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not sure whether your vehicle is an e-bike or an electric motorcycle, contact the Jacksonville Beach Police Department before you ride,\u201d he said. \u201cWe encourage every parent and rider to know the law, ride responsibly, and always to wear a helmet.\u201d<\/p>\n
