{"id":951723,"date":"2026-07-22T11:42:23","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T11:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/951723\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T11:42:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T11:42:23","slug":"as-u-s-grapples-with-destructive-wildfires-el-nino-offers-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/951723\/","title":{"rendered":"As U.S. grapples with destructive wildfires, El Ni\u00f1o offers hope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As wildfires rage across Canada and the American West, the announcement from federal forecasters that an El Ni\u00f1o warming is forming thousands of miles away in the tropical Pacific Ocean may offer some regions relief \u2014 next year, at least.<\/p>\n<p>The El Ni\u00f1o climate pattern materializes erratically every two to seven years and can last up to a year. During its tenure, El Ni\u00f1o often brings wetter conditions to the Southern United States. While extra rain can <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-13\/super-el-nino-is-brewing-how-bad-would-historic-weather-system-get\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bring flooding and landslide risks<\/a>, it can also keep vegetation moist, lowering the potential for wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/el-nino-forms-expected-to-strengthen-say-noaa-forecasters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced in June<\/a> that El Ni\u00f1o had arrived, predict <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-09\/strong-el-nino-now-virtual-certainty-what-it-means-for-california\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this iteration will be \u201cvery strong,\u201d<\/a> bringing a greater promise of a wet winter.<\/p>\n<p>Despite an active El Ni\u00f1o, experts say the Southwestern United States likely won\u2019t feel its damping effect until next year. A <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2025JD045436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent study from NOAA researchers<\/a> found that it\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s wet fall, winter and spring seasons that often bring a notably milder wildfire season the following summer.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Western U.S. is still suffering the consequences of a hot winter and meager snowpack, in part thanks to El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s polar-opposite sister, La Ni\u00f1a, which brought cool ocean water to South America\u2019s Pacific coast and drier conditions to the Southern U.S. through early 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the \u2018helping effect\u2019 of El Ni\u00f1o in much of the United States won\u2019t be felt until sometime next year,\u201d said NOAA Research Meteorologist Andrew Hoell, a study author. With the most recent La Ni\u00f1a just ending, \u201cwe\u2019re still in the crosshairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoell and his colleagues analyzed nearly four decades of El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a oscillations and wildfire burn areas to understand how often the fire season mirrors the climate cycle.<\/p>\n<p>They found El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s \u201chelping effect\u201d is far from guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>An indicator, not a crystal ball<\/p>\n<p>For starters, the group looked at how the climate cycle influences the probability of wildfires burning significantly more land than normal \u2014 meaning even if El Ni\u00f1o reduces the odds of an active fire season, it does not bring those odds to zero.<\/p>\n<p>The climate cycle is \u201cproviding us some early prognostics in terms of an outlook \u2014 better than having nothing,\u201d said John Abatzoglou, a climatology professor at UC Merced who has <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/2015GL063428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">independently studied the link between wilfires and El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>. However, from those early outlooks, \u201cthings can change quite a bit. Things will change quite a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hope for the South, less so for the North<\/p>\n<p>While El Ni\u00f1o brings colder and wetter conditions to the Southern U.S., it typically generates drier and warmer weather up north. Similarly, while La Ni\u00f1a brings drier and hotter weather in the south, it can create wetter and colder conditions in the northern U.S.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o forms when winds blowing over the Pacific, from the Americas toward Asia, die down, allowing warm tropic water pushed up against Asia to slosh toward the Americas. As that warm blob of ocean water hugs the coast of South America, it heats the air above, causing the pressure to drop.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Map showing the typical effects of an El Ni\u00f1o pattern on winter in North America.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784720543_89_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>          <\/p>\n<p>(Paul Duginski \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>Storms begin to form and a strengthened Pacific jet stream is pulled from Canada down over the Southern U.S. That jet stream acts as a giant conveyor belt, bringing storms and rain to the Southern U.S. \u2014 but that El Ni\u00f1o conveyor belt doesn\u2019t typically reach northern states.<\/p>\n<p>While the conveyor belt helps create a pretty clear link between El Ni\u00f1o and wildfire activity in the Southern U.S., the picture up north is hazier. Even though El Ni\u00f1o brings hotter and drier conditions to the north, researchers haven\u2019t conclusively found it leads to larger or more frequent fires. While some studies have found that relationship, others \u2014 like the recent NOAA study \u2014 found the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Complex weather and ecology muddies the effect<\/p>\n<p>The effects of the climate cycle on wildfires are muddied by countless other weather and ecological factors. Take Arizona and New Mexico for example \u2014 the NOAA study found they are often a summertime refuge of decreased wildfire activity following the hot and dry La Ni\u00f1a phase.<\/p>\n<p>While pinning down the exact reason why these states buck the trend is difficult, Hoell hypothesized the region\u2019s unique summer monsoon rains could alleviate the risk. Abatzoglou hypothesized the region\u2019s link between wildfires and soil moisture could cause the mitigating effects of the preceding El Ni\u00f1o to linger longer.<\/p>\n<p>Southern California, meanwhile, might not have to wait as long for relief.
