It&#8217;s caused by the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Cyclospora infects the small intestine (bowel) and usually causes watery diarrhea with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements,&#8221; the CDC says on its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cyclosporiasis can last anywhere from days to over a month if untreated, and symptoms could relapse one or more times after a person feels better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It usually takes about a week to start showing symptoms, the CDC reports, but symptom onset can occur anywhere from two days to two weeks after infection.<\/p>\n<p>How many cases of cyclosporiasis are in New York City?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NYC&#8217;s Health Department <a data-ylk=\"slk:says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/health\/health-topics\/cyclosporiasis.page\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> as of July 20, 447 cases have been reported since May 1 of this year.<\/p>\n<p>How does cyclosporiasis spread?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The sickness spreads through food or drinking water that is contaminated with feces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;In the US, outbreaks of cyclosporiasis have been linked to various types of fresh produce,&#8221;
