As well as allowing us to perform functional, everyday movements such as lifting, reaching, pushing and pulling with ease, having a strong upper body also means we give ourselves the best possible chance of getting up again if we were to fall. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Sarcopenia \u2013 the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength with age \u2013 typically begins around the age of 30, with the body <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2804956\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2804956\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"losing around 3-5% of its muscle mass per decade\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">losing around 3-5% of its muscle mass per decade<\/a> from this point. Those who are less physically active tend to be at a higher risk, and the rate of decline often speeds up after 60.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">As well as affecting muscle mass, sarcopenia is also linked to an increased risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a60450744\/resistance-training-osteoporosis-transformation-before-and-after\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a60450744\/resistance-training-osteoporosis-transformation-before-and-after\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"osteoporosis\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">osteoporosis<\/a>; a health condition that affects women significantly more than men and weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. That\u2019s partly because when muscle mass declines, your bones undergo less mechanical load \u2013 and the lack of stimulation can lead to bones losing density. This can cause all sorts of issues for how we move and function in everyday life.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Luckily, there\u2019s a lot that we can do to strengthen our muscles and bones. And don\u2019t go thinking it\u2019s too late or that it\u2019ll take too long \u2013 fitness trainer and content creator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jenedwardsfitness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jenedwardsfitness\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Jen Edwards\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jen Edwards<\/a> challenges both of those misconceptions. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Edwards, whose online training platform focuses on home strength training for women over 40, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZvZmGhhiuN\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZvZmGhhiuN\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"revealed the five-minute dumbbell-only workout\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">revealed the five-minute dumbbell-only workout<\/a> that she does at 51 to build strong arms.   <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018This quick 5-minute workout targets your shoulders, chest, biceps, back, and triceps using just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a70298149\/high-rep-light-weight-vs-low-rep-heavy-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a70298149\/high-rep-light-weight-vs-low-rep-heavy-weight\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"light dumbbells\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">light dumbbells<\/a>,\u2019 she wrote on Instagram. \u2018These are the same types of exercises I use regularly to help build strength, improve muscle tone, and support healthy ageing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"29.0\">The workout <\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\">\u2018Complete each exercise for 30 seconds, move from one exercise to the next with no rest, and repeat the circuit 2-3 times if you have time,\u2019 says Edwards.  <\/p>\n<p> How to do the movesUpward delt pulse<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"39.0\">Standing with your feet together and holding two dumbbells in your hands, raise your arms in front of you until your upper arms reach chest height, keeping your elbows bent.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"39.1\">Move your shoulders up and down to pulse your arms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Goalpost arm sweep <\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"41.0\">Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Raise your upper arms until they&#8217;re level with your shoulders and bend your elbows to 90 degrees, creating a &#8216;goalpost&#8217; shape.<br data-node-id=\"41.0.1\"\/><\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"41.1\">Keeping your core engaged, bring your forearms together in front of your chest while maintaining the 90-degree bend in your elbows. Return to the original position to complete one full rep.<br data-node-id=\"41.1.1\"\/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>High dumbbell curl<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"43.0\">Start with your dumbbells by your thighs. Curl them up towards your shoulders as if performing a bicep curl, then continue the movement by extending the arms straight out in front at shoulder height. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"43.1\">Reverse the motion with control, bringing the weights back to your shoulders, and continue extending and curling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul data-node-id=\"45\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"45.0\">Holding a dumbbell in each hand, take a big step back with your right leg. Bend both knees and lift your right heel, keeping your toe planted for balance.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"45.1\">Keeping your back straight and your chin tucked, lean forwards and draw your dumbbells towards your waist, keeping your elbows tucked into your side.<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"45.2\">To complete the rep, extend the arms back to the starting position. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol data-node-id=\"46\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\"\/>\n<ul data-node-id=\"48\" class=\"css-12c7ta7 emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"48.0\">Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding one dumbbell in each hand. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"48.1\">Bring the weights overhead, extending your arms straight so the dumbbells are above your head. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"48.2\">Keeping everything from your shoulders to elbows still, slowly bend your elbows, lowering the weights behind your head until your arms are just lower than 90 degrees. Your elbows should point forward, not out to the side. <\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"48.3\">Pause, and raise back to straight.
