\n\tJohnny Depp<\/a> stole the spotlight at Comic-Con<\/a> on Thursday, appearing in full Scrooge costume for his upcoming Ti West<\/a>-directed movie Ebenezer.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe appearance today by the three-time Oscar nominee came as part of a stunt in which the David Ellison-owned Paramount<\/a> Pictures fired up a faux 1880s British Christmas village in San Diego\u2019s Gaslamp district.<\/p>\n

\n\tDepp emerged from the door of the installation and addressed the crowd, which had been gathering on the street in front of the installation for more than an hour. They shouted questions and offered salutations, including \u201cGood day to you, Mr. Scrooge.\u201d He responded in full character, \u201cWhat\u2019s so good about it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe stunt began with Victorian carolers emerging singing Christmas songs, after which Depp-as-Scrooge appeared in the window of the mock storefront. He then emerged from the door. Later, another character in Dickensian period garb began asking him about fair wages, which drew only grumbles from Scrooge.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe moment was peppered throughout by the crowd shouting things like \u201cWe love you\u201d to Depp, who stayed in character the entire time \u2014 including some sort of nose prosthetic.<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore he left, he quietly said \u201cHumbug\u201d to the crowd.<\/p>\n

\n\tMotion picture marketing execs cry about the oxygen being sucked out of San Diego Comic-Con by rival studios, even if Disney\u2019s Hall H Marvel panel<\/a> is one of the last hoorahs to go down Saturday night. But along comes Depp this afternoon for a mic-drop moment, appearing shortly after DC\u2019s Jim Lee panel that featured a look at James Watkins\u2019 upcoming movie Clayface<\/a>. It just goes to show you don\u2019t always need a Q&A panel at SDCC with actors and footage to get attention; always better to zag then zig in your marketing.<\/p>\n

\n\tBy our count, today marked Depp\u2019s third time at San Diego Comic-Con; previously, he went full-on guerrilla theater on the 2018\u2019s Warner Bros\u2019 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald panel, where he showed up as the titular character ranting about freedom and truth. (An hour later that year, his ex-wife Amber Heard appeared at Warner Bros\u2019 Aquaman panel, in what was heralded by the media as a weird moment. At the time, Heard had settled a $7 million divorce with Depp, in which she first accused him of physical abuse, only to dismiss the claims in a 2016 settlement.)<\/p>\n

\n\tDepp also appeared at SDCC in 2009 for Disney\u2019s Tim Burton movie Alice in Wonderland. <\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s par for the course for Depp to show up in character. In a 2013 interview with EW he revealed that he carried his Jack Sparrow Pirates of the Caribbean costume with him so he can make surprise visits to children\u2019s hospitals.<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing his 2022 defamation battle with Heard over a Washington Post op-ed in which she wrote about being a victim of domestic abuse, Depp showed up at Cannes 2023 to do press for his opening-night film Jeanne du Barry. Since then, Depp has become more visible in public since then, i.e., showing up at the 2025 Red Sea Film Festival and at CinemaCon in April to promote Ebenezer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was at Cannes three years ago where Deadline asked Depp whether he still felt boycotted by Hollywood, statements he expressed in an August 2021 Sunday Times interview.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe answered<\/a>, \u201cDid I feel a boycott by Hollywood? Well, you\u2019d have to not have a pulse to feel at that point, \u2018None of this is happening, it\u2019s just a weird joke or I have been asleep for 35 years.\u2019\u00a0Of course, when you\u2019re asked to resign from a film you\u2019re doing, because of something that is merely a bunch of kind of vowels and consonants floating in the air, you feel a boycott.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also added, \u201cDo I feel a boycott now? No, not at all. I don\u2019t feel boycotted by Hollywood because I don\u2019t think about Hollywood. I don\u2019t have much further need for Hollywood myself,\u201d he added. \u201cI think it\u2019s a very strange, funny time where everybody wants to be themselves, but they can\u2019t, they must fall in line, conform \u2014 and if you want to lead this life, I\u2019ll be on the other side.\u201d<\/p>\n
