{"id":956066,"date":"2026-07-24T11:30:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T11:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/956066\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T11:30:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T11:30:26","slug":"tga-issues-warning-over-glp-1-based-drugs-potential-to-cause-rare-eye-disorder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/956066\/","title":{"rendered":"TGA issues warning over GLP-1-based drugs&#8217; potential to cause rare eye disorder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The medicines regulator has issued a new safety warning for GLP-1-based drugs, like Ozempic, which could potentially cause a rare but serious eye disorder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Therapeutic Goods Administration&#8217;s (TGA) warning covers the following glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which are used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowVisible__N2zKU\">\n<li>Semaglutide, sold as Ozempic, Wegovy<\/li>\n<li>Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro<\/li>\n<li>Dulaglutide, sold as Trulicity<\/li>\n<li>Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The TGA said the products had the potential to cause an eye disorder called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;(NAION) may result in permanent visual impairment, including blindness, and no treatment has been shown to improve visual acuity outcomes,&#8221; the TGA&#8217;s safety warning said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NAION is caused by a disruption in blood flow to the optic nerve at the back of the eye and typically presents suddenly upon waking and without pain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/health\/2025-03-07\/ozempic-wegovy-semaglutide-food-noise-weight-loss\/104978348\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How Ozempic works in the brain to help people lose weight<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">People on Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonist drugs commonly report they no longer have constant, incessant thoughts about food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The regulator said anyone taking GLP-1 medicines should be alert to any signs of vision loss, stop taking the medicine and seek urgent medical attention if any changes were noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">So far, 36 cases of the eye disorder associated with GLP-1 drugs have been reported on the national database of adverse events, the TGA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Twenty-three of those were among people taking semaglutide, three were taking liraglutide and 10 were using tirzepatide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The TGA said it first identified the potential association between GLP-1 drugs and NAION in 2024 when a study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Ophthalmology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The study examined almost 17,000 US patients and found those prescribed semaglutide had a higher risk of NAION than those taking non-GLP-1 medications for diabetes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A box of Ozempic pens.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2fcc43fb30526459f0b6c2c5e0787115.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The TGA has issued a product warning for all GLP-1 RA medicines due to a risk of a rare, but severe form of eye disorder. (Supplied: Centre for Eye Research Australia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Optometrist and vision scientist Dr Flora Hui from the Centre for Eye Research Australia said around 70 per cent of people did not recover their vision and someone&#8217;s risk of developing NAION also increased if they had diabetes, sleep apnoea or hypertension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">People are also anatomically disposed to NAION if they have a crowded optic disc. The optic disc is where the optic nerve connects to the retina and when it is crowded, nerve fibres are more vulnerable to blood supply problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Hui said people should not panic about the TGA&#8217;s updated advice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There is a small risk of developing NAION with these drugs so making informed choices are important, especially if you have many of the risk factors associated with NAION,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Reduce your other risk factors associated with NAION by improving heart health, blood pressure and cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-02\/world-health-organization-guidelines-ozempic-obesity\/106085946\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WHO endorses Ozempic-style drugs for weight loss<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ozempic-style medications have been recommended as long-term treatments for obesity under new guidelines released by the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Most importantly, have regular eye tests with your optometrist or ophthalmologist whilst you&#8217;re being treated and letting them know that you&#8217;re taking these medications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Garron Dodd, head of the Metabolic Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, thinks there is still a question mark over whether the GLP-1 based drugs actually cause NAION considering most people taking the drug already have known risk factors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Nearly all the evidence is retrospective, drawn from insurance claims and electronic health records \u2026 separating the drug from the condition it treats is the hard part, and no study has managed it cleanly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said it was important people did not stop taking their medication on the basis of this safety update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For someone with type 2 diabetes or significant obesity, the cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic benefits [of these medications] are large and well-established, and stopping abruptly carries its own risks, so any change should be a conversation with your prescriber,&#8221;
