Shiou Deng, a 26-year veteran with the Los Angeles Police Department, was killed in a crash along the 405 Freeway near Westwood Monday morning, his friends and colleagues are remembering Deng for his kindness and dedication to helping others.<\/p>\n<p>Deng was struck and killed near the Getty Center Monday morning after stopping to offer help to two victims of a crash. When Deng stepped out of his vehicle, he was hit by another driver and transported to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he died.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taking care of vulnerable people of Los Angeles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deng joined\u00a0the LAPD in October 1998.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During his time as an officer, he spent 17 years working with the mental health evaluation unit where he focused on vulnerable community members.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, he was promoted to sergeant and assigned to the West LA station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a deeply respected leader within our department and a trusted protector of our communities,\u201d Chief Jim McDonnell <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LAPDPIO\/status\/1937182296202961045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a Monday statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018He could be a comedian\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deng was beloved by his colleagues for his kindness, compassion and humor.<\/p>\n<p>Det.Victor Lopez, who knew Deng since meeting him at the LAPD Academy, described Deng\u2019s humor as \u201cnext level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could actually be a comedian, that\u2019s what I\u2019ll miss most,\u201d Lopez said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lopez added that he \u201cbrought light\u201d into a lot of situations, and was a very enjoyable person to be around.<\/p>\n<p>Deng\u2019s colleagues knew him to be \u201cexceptionally funny\u201d and \u201ccaring to a fault,\u201d McDonnell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think about him, he died a hero,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deng is survived by his wife and parents.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After Sgt.
