The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wings<\/a> made the franchise\u2019s best 25-game start to a season since 2008, when they were known as the Detroit Shock, and recently had a six-game winning streak. Dallas sits at fourth in the league standings and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/paige-bueckers-jessica-shepard-wnba-all-star-22330542.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boasts two All-Stars<\/a>: second-year phenom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/paige-bueckers\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paige Bueckers<\/a> and veteran forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/jessica-shepard-proving-crucial-dallas-wings-22276714.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica Shepard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\"><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/dallas-wings-wnba-rise-paige-bueckers-azzi-fudd-22277089.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It&#8217;s early in the 2026 season, but this Dallas Wings team already looks radically different<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the playoffs in sight for the Wings, talks of championship potential have surrounded the team, which underwent a rebuild in the offseason. During free agency, Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/jessica-shepard-sign-multi-year-deal-wings-22200126.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquired former Minnesota Lynx forwards Shepard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/wings-sign-alanna-smith-defensive-player-of-year-22201748.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alanna Smith<\/a>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/dallas-wings-sign-alysha-clark-wnba-free-agency-22206858.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">veterans Alysha Clark<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/odyssey-sims-returns-irving-macarthur-22208987.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Odyssey Sims<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Wings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/ogunbowale-signing-massive-contract-return-wings-22199897.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">re-signed All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/awak-kuier-return-dallas-wings-2026-wnba-season-22201371.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">returned forward Awak Kuier<\/a>, who had been out of WNBA play since after the 2023 season. Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/dallas-wings-select-azzi-fudd-wnba-draft-22200094.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took Fudd No. 1 overall in the draft<\/a>, reuniting the Bueckers-Fudd backcourt that won a national championship at UConn in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>New coach Fernandez, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/10\/27\/dallas-wings-announce-jose-fernandez-as-next-head-coach\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hired in October<\/a>, pieced everything together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\"><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/dallas-wings-jose-fernandez-geno-auriemma-bueckers-22306128.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jose Fernandez has a Geno Auriemma-like intensity, but that doesn&#8217;t tell his full story<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Dallas ranks fourth in the WNBA in offense with an average of 90.2 points per game and fourth in field goal percentage with a mark of 46.5%. The Wings are on pace to make the second-highest jump in win percentage between seasons in WNBA history, according to ESPN Insights.<\/p>\n<p>All-Star play\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bueckers, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/04\/14\/dallas-wings-select-uconns-paige-bueckers-with-no-1-pick-in-2025-wnba-draft\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2025 No. 1 overall pick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2025\/09\/16\/dallas-wings-paige-bueckers-named-wnba-rookie-of-the-year\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WNBA Rookie of the Year<\/a>, is having an exceptional sophomore season and has been paramount to the Wings\u2019 ascent.<\/p>\n<p>In 25 games played, the two-time All-Star starter has averaged 20.9 points, 6.2 assists and 4.2 rebounds. Bueckers, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/paige-bueckers-ap-player-of-the-week-dallas-wings-22345052.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">named AP Player of the Week and WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week<\/a>, is shooting 39.7% from 3 and 51.3% from the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\"><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/paige-bueckers-dallas-wings-leader-22326036.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers has approached this WNBA season differently<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>She ranks sixth in the league in points and sixth in assists, and has delivered in the clutch repeatedly for Dallas \u2014 at one point leading the league in fourth quarter scoring.<\/p>\n<p>Shepard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/paige-bueckers-jessica-shepard-wnba-all-star-22330542.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">named an All-Star for the first time in her career<\/a> in 2026, has taken some of the pressure off Bueckers and is having a career year.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s averaging 14.9 points, a league-high 12.0 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. Shepard, who has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/jessica-shepard-named-wnba-western-conference-22317120.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">picked up Player of the Week honors<\/a>, has recorded four triple doubles this season. Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/article\/wings-can-t-finish-sweep-a-ja-wilson-aces-22321695.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gave up 99 points in its third meeting with the Aces<\/a>, a team the Wings beat twice previously. Against the Valkyries, Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/article\/gabby-williams-scores-25-points-in-valkyries-4th-22310583.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allowed 91 points in an 11-point loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Checking in with the top earners<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest pieces Dallas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/wings-sign-alanna-smith-defensive-player-of-year-22201748.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">added in free agency<\/a> was Smith, the reigning co-defensive player of the year. But the forward has struggled to see the floor this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Initially in the starting lineup, Smith suffered a preseason nasal fracture that required her to wear a mask. The mask has since come off, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/alanna-smith-injury-dallas-wings-chicago-sky-22313716.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she\u2019s missed time with other injuries<\/a> and has averaged 3.8 points on 38.5% shooting, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 20 games played this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These likely weren\u2019t the returns the Wings expected from Smith, one of the highest paid players on the roster with a 2026 salary of $1,190,000, according to the Her Hoops Stats WNBA Salary Cap Database.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ogunbowale, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/dallas-wings-arike-ogunbowale-reflects-1-2-22245720.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tied with Smith for the highest-paid on the roster<\/a>, also signed a multiyear deal with Dallas, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/2019\/04\/10\/wnba-draft-central-wings-take-notre-dame-s-arike-ogunbowale-in-first-round-get-a-steal-in-iowa-s-megan-gustafson\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">selected her in the first round of the 2019 draft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\"><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/dallas-wings-arike-ogunbowale-reflects-1-2-22245720.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;I&#8217;m seeing the new WNBA&#8217;: Arike Ogunbowale reflects on $1.2 million contract with Wings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The All-Star guard, averaging 14.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, has performed well in several contests this season.<\/p>\n<p>In the last game before the All-Star break, she scored a game-high 24 points on 8 of 12 shooting and recorded six assists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/wings\/article\/dallas-wings-portland-fire-score-jessica-shepard-22356136.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the Wings\u2019 101-97 win over the Portland Fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But her output has been inconsistent.<\/p>\n<p>Ogunbowale has scored 20 or more points 11 times this season, but has recorded less than 10 points in 10 contests.
