{"id":958117,"date":"2026-07-25T10:19:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T10:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/958117\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T10:19:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T10:19:15","slug":"commission-approves-300m-for-philadelphia-area-trails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/958117\/","title":{"rendered":"Commission approves $300M+ for Philadelphia-area trails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>A regional transportation planning board has approved at least $300 million in federal, state and local funding to expand pedestrian and bike trails in the Philadelphia region.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvrpc.org\/tip\/pa27\/full%20draft%20ffy%202027%20tip%20for%20pa%20document.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The projects aim to improve<\/a> pedestrian and bicyclist safety in traffic-heavy areas of the city and the surrounding counties, reduce vehicle emissions, and improve access to natural resources.\n<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Dr. Barbara Friedes, a 30-year-old doctor at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia, was killed after a <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-driver-sentenced-physician-bike-lane\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drunk driver struck her <\/a>in the bike lane at 18th and Spruce streets. She was one of 17 pedestrian and three cyclist fatalities in 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/bicyclecoalition.org\/traffic-fatalities-see-a-decrease-in-the-first-6-months-of-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Bicycle Coalition.<\/a>\n  <\/p>\n<p>Part of the investment from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission will support the <a href=\"https:\/\/circuittrails.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Circuit Trail network,<\/a> which aims to connect more than 850 miles of trails in the Philadelphia region by 2040.
