{"id":959185,"date":"2026-07-25T22:29:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T22:29:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/959185\/"},"modified":"2026-07-25T22:29:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T22:29:24","slug":"maine-moms-bladder-mistakenly-removed-during-surgery-wins-17m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/959185\/","title":{"rendered":"Maine mom&#8217;s bladder mistakenly removed during surgery, wins $17M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Maine mom who checked into the hospital for a routine surgery woke up to a medical nightmare after a surgeon allegedly removed her bladder instead of an ovarian cyst.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Mitchell, 43, of Skowhegan, was awarded $15.75 million after a jury found Northern Light Inland Hospital negligent in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/18\/us-news\/nyc-mom-died-during-botched-implant-procedure-by-sham-plastic-surgeon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">botched operation<\/a> that left her permanently disabled, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2026\/07\/24\/central-maine\/central-maine-police-courts\/maine-northern-light-health-bladder-removal-jury-15m-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bangor Daily News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell underwent laparoscopic surgery in March 2023 expecting doctors to remove a cyst from her left ovary. Instead, court records say surgeon Dr. Danielle Gagnon mistakenly removed nearly all of her healthy bladder.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40087753\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/crop-40087721.jpg\" alt=\"The front of a hospital that says Northern Lights\" class=\"wp-image-40087753\"  \/>Northern Lights Hospital where Emily Mitchell, 43, underwent botched surgery that resulted in a lifetime of problems. WMTW8<\/p>\n<p>The shocking blunder wasn\u2019t discovered until Mitchell returned to the hospital in excruciating pain, suffering from severe bloating and unable to urinate. <\/p>\n<p>She was rushed to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where surgeons preparing to repair what they believed was a bladder injury made a horrifying discovery \u2014 her bladder was gone.<\/p>\n<p>For more than eight months, Mitchell\u2019s attorneys said she relied on tubes to drain urine directly from her kidneys while enduring recurrent urinary tract infections, kidney infections, multiple medical procedures, \u201cand ongoing complications,\u201d according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmtw.com\/article\/maine-woman-bladder-mistakenly-removed-record-award-jury\/73257651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> local news station WMTW8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Surgeons ultimately fashioned Mitchell a new bladder using a section of her small intestine after determining too little of the original organ remained to repair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscentermaine.com\/article\/news\/local\/courts-news\/jury-awards-17-million-skowhegan-woman-whose-bladder-mistakenly-removed-surgery-kennebec\/97-3f34b018-1990-47f2-8324-49f38ba4abd9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said News Center Maine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than three years later, Mitchell is still battling recurring urinary tract infections and faces lifelong medical care because of the devastating mistake.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.77777778;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40087719\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/jury-awarded-woman-skowhegan-17-135457748.jpg\" alt=\"Northern Light Hospital in Maine\" class=\"wp-image-40087719\"  \/>The hospital is no longer in business after a string of problems that led to financial losses.
