After\u00a0a\u00a0long run, Miller\u00a0picked out\u00a0Reus in the middle of the park, who then played the ball ahead of Paintsil\u00a0into\u00a0the box.\u00a0With his first touch, Paintsil\u00a0fired\u00a0a low, right-footed shot past the goalkeeper\u00a0for the opening score.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SJ\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Reid Roberts,\u00a063rd\u00a0minute:<\/strong>\u00a0A\u00a0free kick by Timo Werner ricocheted off the crossbar\u00a0and\u00a0bounced\u00a0around\u00a0inside the box\u00a0before the loose ball\u00a0fell to Roberts for a tap in at the far post\u00a0to level\u00a0the match at 1-1.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0105th overall\u00a0edition of the\u00a0California\u00a0Cl\u00e1sico\u00a0ended in a 1-1 draw\u00a0at Stanford Stadium tonight, the 19th regular-season draw of the series all-time. But I\u00a0thought tonight,\u00a0the response was good in a tough place to play, against a tough team to play.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0a narrow field. They want to press,\u00a0they get after you,\u00a0they send a lot of numbers high. I just thought the desire to compete and fight\u00a0was good. It was the\u00a0third game\u00a0in\u00a0the week for us, second for them.\u00a0So\u00a0I thought the guys just dug really deep and showed a lot of character and battled. We had enough chances there, especially down the second half where I thought we could take the win. Unfortunately, we\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0get those. Keeper made a couple good saves,\u00a0post\u00a0got one of them. And then JT\u00a0[Marcinkowski]\u00a0had to\u00a0come\u00a0up\u00a0with\u00a0a big save on the penalty. But it was a game that had a lot of things in it. I was super proud of these guys for the response and the effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0the differences between San Jose and LAFC:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u00a0couldn&#8217;t\u00a0play more differently. LAFC was perfectly fine\u00a0sitting in a low block, defending in\u00a0their half\u00a0of the field, protecting their goal, forcing us to break them down. Playing off our turnovers and trying to get counterattacks. Playing off set pieces and things like that. They are competent, obviously in possession, and they can do things, but they\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0even try to press us the night we\u00a0played\u00a0them. They\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0on goal kicks, they just backed off most of the game. They just kept themselves connected. It was completely\u00a0opposite\u00a0of this game. San Jose almost never backs off. They are coming all the time.\u00a0They&#8217;re\u00a0trying to get\u00a0man-to-man. Even if you break them,\u00a0they&#8217;re\u00a0recovering, trying to get back under the ball and then back to stepping out\u00a0man-to-man\u00a0as quickly as possible. They expose themselves in transitions.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0like we can hurt you more than you can hurt\u00a0us\u00a0or we can score more aggressively than you can score against us.\u00a0So\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0just totally two different games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Marco Reus and\u00a0the team\u2019s performance on the road compared to at home:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve got to get our home performances and our home results moving in the right direction. It should be our\u00a0fortress\u00a0and we should be getting points there. Whether that&#8217;s Marco taking the reins, our center backs doing their job, midfield doing their job. I just think collectively\u00a0we&#8217;ve\u00a0all got to have a good night together on our home field.\u00a0Like, you know, the last time I did this, it was really hard.\u00a0Yeah, but I think\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0worth it. So,\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0going to go with that. And I feel like the last couple of games we had some below the level performances, which means collectively, we were also below the level, and then we\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0get\u00a0results,\u00a0we made mistakes, things like that.\u00a0Today I think a lot of guys\u00a0played to their level. And as a result, we looked like a more competent team in certain phases of the game, and we were able to get something out of it and had the possibility to win it. So again, I just think we all\u00a0individually\u00a0and\u00a0collectively\u00a0need to play better when\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0at home. And it needs to be quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>LA Galaxy\u00a0Goalkeeper\u00a0JT Marcinkowski<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0saving the stoppage-time penalty:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u00a0was just trying to make up for the little bit of a mistake that I made.\u00a0I think our team\u00a0deserved at least\u00a0a point\u00a0tonight, if not more. I was just trying to do my best to preserve that.\u00a0I think the guys\u00a0put in\u00a0a hell\u00a0of a shift. It was just a really collective effort throughout the\u00a0ninety five\u00a0minutes.\u00a0I\u00a0just do my best to make sure we get something out of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0his return to San Jose:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to these games growing up.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0no secret that I played for San Jose for seven years. At the same time,\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0so happy and\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0so thankful to be down here [in LA] and just\u00a0kind of have\u00a0a fresh start, a fresh opportunity to prove myself again.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0all I can ask for and just want to make the most of the opportunity. So\u00a0yeah, I had a bunch of family and friends in the stands, and it was amazing seeing them after the game. But at the end of the day, we were just trying, I\u00a0think\u00a0as a team, to put in a better performance than we have in the past two games. And\u00a0I think we\u00a0were a little unlucky not to get all three points tonight.\u00a0I think Joe\u00a0[Paintsil]\u00a0had a few\u00a0really big\u00a0chances that on another night they go in. Just trying to soak it all in really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0rebounding from the club\u2019s midweek loss:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s for sure a team spirit\u00a0that&#8217;s\u00a0united and I think when you put in a performance like we did tonight on the road in a bit of a tough environment, it always shows some character. It shows some grit. It shows some tenacity\u00a0that I think we\u00a0need to carry into every game and\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0just have to be on the road in hostile environments.\u00a0I think we\u00a0need to impose ourselves more in every match, home or away. And I\u00a0think tonight\u00a0we can look at some of the good stuff that we did. Obviously, there were a few negatives as well, and\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0learn from those.
