LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Lubbock woman has launched a new farmers market in Tahoka, with plans to grow the event into a community staple and eventually hand the business to her granddaughter.<\/p>\n

Leanna Adams owns several businesses in Lubbock, including a salon. Being from the small town of Lamesa, she knew how something like a farmers market could make a difference, so when she saw available land on South Fifth Street in Tahoka, the idea was born.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo give other people in the community a chance to do their own business, to draw the community together \u2014 we have great farmers out there that are local,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

The first Tahoka Farmers Market<\/a> was held July 4. Vendors at the event included bee farmers, bakers and artisans. Adams said fresh produce sold out before the market officially opened. A DJ and live local music were also part of the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve been so excited about it and they have really been so supportive,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

Adams said she plans to support a local family or organization each month. For the next market, proceeds from a silent auction will benefit Rhonda\u2019s Helping Hands<\/a>, an organization that raises money each year for a local family dealing with financial or medical burdens.<\/p>\n

She also plans to donate one booth each month to a business that is just getting started. Adams said she is working with Tahoka students interested in business to help market the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally, that\u2019s what the town has been so excited about…it brings the community together,\u201d Adams said. \u201cAt the market we definitely want to help promote it. So, what we do is give back to the community, like for families in need.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams said she started the market with her now 3-year-old granddaughter in mind and plans to hand her the business when she turns 18.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I hope that she takes it even further,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

Brooke Krier, who works in Adams\u2019 building, said the venture was not a surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love farmers markets. We go to the Wolfforth one all the time and this is just Leanna\u2019s heart,\u201d Krier said. \u201cShe just loves to help people and she\u2019s like the mama bear of the salon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tahoka Farmers Market is held the first Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1507 S. 5th St. Adams said she is still looking for seven vendors for the Aug. 1 market and could especially use a food truck, coffee truck and a boutique.<\/p>\n
