{"id":96068,"date":"2025-07-27T06:41:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T06:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/96068\/"},"modified":"2025-07-27T06:41:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T06:41:10","slug":"lgbtq-community-center-could-face-possible-layoffs-due-to-federal-funding-cuts-nbc-7-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/96068\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQ+ Community Center could face possible layoffs due to federal funding cuts \u2013 NBC 7 San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On July 3rd, the San Diego LGBTQ+ Community Center sent out WARN letters to all of its 106 employees informing them about possible layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Gus Hernandez, a spokesperson for the center, said currently there are no set layoffs, but the letters were issued out of an abundance of caution.<\/p>\n<p>He said the letter intends to prepare employees for the possibility of layoffs in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest concern is that the federal government is targeting the LGBTQ+ community and other vulnerable populations with these actions,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the community and some San Diegans are equally concerned as the community center offers healthcare and other programs for the community.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Monreal has benefitted from some of those resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be very unfortunate if there are any cuts, because I feel like a lot of people here, locally, do depend on them, just for support,\u201d Monreal said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s not alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very sad because that community has been there for many years that I can remember. They\u2019ve helped a lot of people that I\u2019ve known,\u201d Jessica Lopez said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worry about the community and I also really worry about people who do need the resources that come from the community center,\u201d Sammuel Deng said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big need in the LGBTQ+ community,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p>About $4.4 million from the center\u2019s $15.5 million dollar budget is federally funded, according to Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal funding that we receive goes primarily to our HIV services, which is part of our sexual health and wellness program, our housing services, behavioral health services and our crisis services,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p>The center is home to more than one hundred employees, but Hernandez said it\u2019s unclear which staff positions could be impacted by possible layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s full of uncertainty for our staff and of course, it trickles down to our clients as well, the folks who receive services at the center,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p>While they wait to find out what happens, they worry for the impact it could have in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sad to see, and sad to hear that something that\u2019s such a vital resource for the community is potentially going to lose resources and lose people who are extremely dedicated to a cause that supports the community here,\u201d Sammuel Deng said.<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez said they plan to continue to offer services as best they can.<\/p>\n<p>He said they\u2019re also considering tapping into alternative funding sources.<\/p>\n<p>If the funding cuts are approved, Hernandez said the first layoffs could take place as early as September 6th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On July 3rd, the San Diego LGBTQ+ Community Center sent out WARN letters to all of its 106&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":96069,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5134],"tags":[5229,1582,276,7720,3549,7264,67,586,132,5230,68,2969],"class_list":{"0":"post-96068","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-diego","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-california","11":"tag-hillcrest","12":"tag-san-diego","13":"tag-sandiego","14":"tag-united-states","15":"tag-united-states-of-america","16":"tag-unitedstates","17":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","18":"tag-us","19":"tag-usa"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/114923836839190363","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/96068","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=96068"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/96068\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/96069"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=96068"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=96068"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=96068"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
