In a sweeping New York Times<\/a> piece, Billy Brennan opens with the story of psychologist Alexander Batthyany, who had an unexpected phone conversation with his otherwise silent grandmother; she spoke to him of cherished memories with her old clarity just days before she died. \n Brennan tracks how the National Institute on Aging has poured $10 million into studying what some now call “paradoxical lucidity,” capturing episodes on video in hospice memory units and surveying caregivers nationwide. The findings: these episodes are real, varied, and not always comforting, and they raise hard questions about what dementia actually does to the mind.
