{"id":962390,"date":"2026-07-27T12:22:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T12:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/962390\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T12:22:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T12:22:15","slug":"ahead-of-netanyahu-trump-meeting-expert-warns-about-renewed-iran-strikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/962390\/","title":{"rendered":"Ahead of Netanyahu-Trump meeting, expert warns about renewed Iran strikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Israel would be blamed for the failure of another large-scale attack against Iran if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tries to persuade US President Donald Trump to renew the strikes during his upcoming visit, former senior defense official and Iranian nuclear expert Avner Vilan told 103FM on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cIf he succeeds in persuading Trump to attack again, and the attack succeeds, I take my hat off to him,\u201d Vilan said. \u201cBut if it does not succeed, the US will blame us even more for dragging it into a war that damaged its international standing and drove up fuel prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with Ilil Shahar and Amichai Attali, Vilan explained that the US and Iran are locked in a fragile status quo between a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-899693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new agreement<\/a> and a return to full-scale war, ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-903573\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected meeting<\/a> with US President Donald Trump in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">He added that neither side was satisfied with the current situation, but neither was in a hurry to change it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cSince the end of Operation Roaring Lion, the situation has been neither here nor there, a kind of status quo involving a new balance of neither peace nor war. It may be a better situation for all the players than the alternatives. (credit: Screenshot\/X\/@PeteHegseth)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The other options on the table, he said, were considerably more complex and dangerous. \u201cThe alternatives are an agreement or high-intensity war,\u201d the former senior official pointed out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iranian concessions and the risks of renewed fighting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">At this stage, however, Vilan assessed that Iran was not prepared to pay the price required under an agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cIran does not want to reach an agreement. It is not prepared to relinquish what it achieved in Hormuz, and therefore it would prefer war to going backward,\u201d he said. \u201cOf course, it does not want to initiate a high-intensity war, and it would prefer to buy time until the midterm elections or until there is a new president in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The US administration\u2019s room to maneuver has also narrowed. Vilan argued that Washington had already gone a significant distance in its efforts to reach an understanding and now expected concessions from Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cThe US is currently in a difficult position,\u201d Vilan said. \u201cThe US has reached the limit of the concessions it can make in an initial agreement. At this point, an agreement would have to include significant Iranian concessions, and that will not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he did not view <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-902078\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renewed strikes<\/a> as a simple solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cA return to fighting would send oil prices soaring, and there is a larger question here: What would they gain from fighting?
