A new study from personal finance website SmartAsset ranks the Dallas suburb as the <a href=\"https:\/\/smartasset.com\/data-studies\/americas-safest-big-cities-2026-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">second-safest big city in the U.S.<\/a> among cities with at least 250,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p>Only Virginia Beach, Virginia ranked higher than Plano.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 study looked at 83 U.S. cities&#8217; violent crimes, property crimes, traffic deaths, and disaster risk.<\/p>\n<p>Plano fared well in three of the four categories: 1.5 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, 14.7 property crimes per 1,000 residents, and 6.9 traffic deaths per 100,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p>However, the study tagged Plano with a \u201crelatively high\u201d risk for natural disasters. You can pin the blame on the potential for tornadoes, flash floods, thunderstorms, and extreme heat in North Texas. <\/p>\n<p>For all cities in the study, disaster risk and traffic deaths were measured at the county level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith consistently low crime rates and exceptional police and fire response times, Plano stands among the safest cities in America, ensuring peace of mind for residents and businesses alike,\u201d Plano Economic Development says on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planotexas.org\/quality-of-life?contentId=68c7a6d2-4e57-4a9d-83ca-f0edb1612458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Plano is one of two Texas cities in the SmartAsset study\u2019s top 10. Laredo appears at No. 6. The top 10 cities are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ee-ul\">\n<li>1. Virginia Beach, Virginia<\/li>\n<li><strong>2. Plano, Texas<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>3. Madison, Wisconsin<\/li>\n<li>4. Honolulu, Hawaii<\/li>\n<li>5. Chesapeake, Virginia<\/li>\n<li>6. Laredo, Texas<\/li>\n<li>7. Lexington, Kentucky<\/li>\n<li>8. Boston, Massachusetts<\/li>\n<li>9. Lincoln, Nebraska<\/li>\n<li>10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWhile no major population center is entirely free from danger, some are more successful than others at creating environments where people can live, work and travel with confidence,\u201d SmartAsset says.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to lifestyle, Plano consistently ranks at or near the top of the rankings. It\u2019s recently been named the 12th <a href=\"https:\/\/dallas.culturemap.com\/news\/city-life\/plano-fittest-city-texas-2026\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fittest city<\/a> in the U.S. and the No. 4 city for <a href=\"https:\/\/dallas.culturemap.com\/news\/city-life\/best-cities-to-live-families\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">raising a family<\/a>, and its park system has <a href=\"https:\/\/dallas.culturemap.com\/news\/entertainment\/best-parks-plano-2026\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">been recognized<\/a> as the country\u2019s 13th best.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how other DFW cities rank in the SmartAsset study:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ee-ul\">\n<li><strong>Arlington<\/strong>, No. 19. It had 4.8 violent crimes per 1,000, 24.1 property crimes per 1,000, 10.8 traffic deaths per 100,000, and a relatively high disaster risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fort Worth<\/strong>, No. 22. It had 4.6 violent crimes per 1,000, 27 property crimes per 1,000, 10.8 traffic deaths per 100,000, and a relatively high disaster risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Irving<\/strong>, No. 32. It had 2.8 violent crimes per 1,000, 22 property crimes per 1,000, 12.5 traffic deaths per 100,000 and a very high disaster risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dallas<\/strong>, No. 73, making it the 11th least safe big city. It had 6.6 violent crimes per 1,000, 33.5 property crimes per 1,000, 12.5 traffic deaths per 100,000, and a very high disaster risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Elsewhere in Texas:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ee-ul\">\n<li>Austin landed at No. 26.<\/li>\n<li>San Antonio landed at No. 54<\/li>\n<li>Houston landed at No. 82, putting it at No. 2 among the least safe big cities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Plano can add a new title to its growing list of superlatives.
