(Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1919:<\/strong> Black teen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/21\/ready-to-explode-how-a-black-teens-drifting-raft-triggered-a-deadly-week-of-riots-100-years-ago-in-chicago\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eugene Williams<\/a> floated on a wooden tie past an invisible but mutually understood line that separated a Black beach at 29th Street from a white beach at 26th Street. White youths threw rocks at him, according to later investigations, and Williams, who could not swim, was hit and drowned. Although several people, white and Black, tried to revive Williams, a police officer at the 26th Street Beach was unwilling to arrest the rock throwers on the word of their Black accusers or to help Williams. Unequal justice proved to be the rule during the ensuing violence, until the four-day chaos finally was ended by the Illinois militia and a cooling rain. Williams is buried in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/07\/25\/as-first-victim-of-chicagos-1919-race-riots-finally-receives-a-grave-marker-heres-a-look-at-other-notable-people-buried-in-lincoln-cemetery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln Cemetery<\/a> in Blue Island.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jURjPPDKwx\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/10\/27\/vintage-chicago-tribune-disasters-crashes-fires-riots-and-more-from-illinois-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Disasters!!!!! Crashes, fires, riots and more from Illinois history.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1960:<\/strong> A Chicago Helicopter Airways chopper, on a shuttle flight between Midway and O\u2019Hare International Airport, <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-13-die-in-chicago-copter\/177420057\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crashed in a Forest Park cemetery<\/a> after one of its rotor blades broke off. The accident killed the two crewmen and 11 passengers, and was blamed on a metal fatigue fracture in the blade. (James O\u2019Leary\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> Sears, Roebuck &amp; Co. \u2014 then the world\u2019s largest retailer \u2014 announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sears-to-construct-talle\/162113443\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">build the world\u2019s tallest building<\/a> \u2014 1,450 feet high with 110 stories.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/04\/28\/building-goliath-the-making-of-the-sears-tower\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sears Tower<\/a> opened in 1973, but was not completed until 1974.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"CGLOwD7Vjv\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/04\/30\/willis-tower-is-no-longer-the-tallest-building-in-the-world-but-its-still-a-trendsetter-as-it-turns-50-this-week\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Willis Tower is no longer the tallest building in the world. But it\u2019s still a trendsetter as it turns 50 this week.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The 1,451-foot tower lost its crown as the world\u2019s tallest when it was surpassed in 1996 by Malaysia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sears-tower-doesnt-end\/171540647\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sears-tower-doesnt-end\/171540647\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Petronas Towers<\/a>, and the American title in 2013 when New York City\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2013\/11\/12\/tallest-building-ruling-willis-tower-loses-to-one-world-trade-center-2\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2013\/11\/12\/tallest-building-ruling-willis-tower-loses-to-one-world-trade-center-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One World Trade Center<\/a>\u00a0was completed. After decades of construction in Asian countries, it\u2019s now the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyscrapercenter.com\/building\/willis-tower\/169\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.skyscrapercenter.com\/building\/willis-tower\/169\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">25th tallest<\/a>\u00a0in the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"More than 50,000 people gathered in Grant Park for a Sly and the Family Stone concert on July 27, 1970, when it devolved into a five-hour riot. Several people were shot, and many police officers and young people were hurt. At least 148 people were arrested. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2015\/07\/25\/1970-rock-concert-at-grant-park-was-a-true-riot-fest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sly and the Family Stone concert<\/a> devolved into a riot. The show was supposed to be a goodwill offering, not only from city officials to the area\u2019s youths, but also from the band to the city to make up for more than one last-minute no-shows.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the rock show disintegrated into a riot that injured 162 people, including 126 police officers. Thirty of those officers were hospitalized. Three young people were shot, though it wasn\u2019t clear by whom. Cars were overturned and set ablaze.<\/p>\n<p>Before its fury was exhausted, the mob rampaged through the Loop, breaking hundreds of windows and looting jewelry and department stores. (Lincoln Park Zoo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> Otto \u2014 a 450-pound gorilla who was the star of the 1976 documentary \u201cOtto: Zoo Gorilla\u201d and named for disgraced former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner \u2014 apparently scaled an 11-foot wall topped with electrical wires in an outdoor enclosure and escaped the Ape House at the Lincoln Park Zoo. He then lumbered north to the Primate House and climbed up a ramp to the Administration Building. He was sitting on the building\u2019s roof just above zoo Director Lester Fisher\u2019s office when veterinarian Tom Meehan hit Otto with tranquilizer darts. It took up to 10 zoo employees to place the gorilla on a stretcher and return him to the Ape House.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"TYVstud8FS\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/08\/03\/vintage-chicago-tribune-how-wrigley-field-got-lights-and-why-cubs-fans-had-to-wait-past-8-8-88-to-raise-w-flag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: How Wrigley Field got lights and why Cubs fans had to wait past 8-8-88 to raise \u2018W\u2019 flag<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> After rejecting arguments that a permanent ban would be illegal, aldermen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-council-delays-vote-on\/177422216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/388164411\/?terms=ban%20%22wrigley%20field%22%20lights&amp;match=1\">voted 42-2 to pass an ordinance<\/a> \u2014 which did not name Wrigley Field or the Tribune-owned Chicago Cubs \u2014 making it illegal to conduct any sporting event between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. in a stadium that \u201ccontains more than 15,000 seats where any such seats are located within 500 feet of 100 or more dwelling units.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"&quot;With 'Siamese Dream,' one of about a dozen good-to-great records out of Chicago this year, the (Smashing) Pumpkins are getting Next Big Thing writeups in national magazines,&quot; Tribune critic Greg Kot wrote about the record in 1993.
