PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 The Federal Aviation Administration is postponing updating flight paths<\/a> for Valley airports after receiving a large volume of public comments on the plan.<\/p>\n

The delay echoes a conflict that began more than a decade ago. In 2014, the FAA changed flight paths in and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport<\/a> without warning and without seeking public input. That move triggered a federal lawsuit.<\/p>\n

Brent Kleinman, who lives in the Encanto-Palmcroft Historic District<\/a>, led his neighborhood association at the time and helped win that lawsuit against the FAA.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rattling that happened as planes were flying overhead scared me, my wife, the dogs,\u201d Kleinman said. \u201cWe were dedicated, and we believed there was a cause to fight for.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FAA\u2019s current proposal would update flight paths to use satellite-based navigation, which the agency says would produce safer and more efficient flights.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom a pilot perspective and a user, I see this as being very little change in the way we are doing things now,\u201d said Cary Grant, a pilot and professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle University.<\/p>\n

The FAA said the volume of public feedback is the reason the agency needs more time to complete its environmental review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Grant said he was a little bit surprised by the delay but thinks it\u2019s a reasonable step.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s good for the FAA to say, \u2018OK, let\u2019s slow down. Let\u2019s take a look at this and address the residents\u2019 concerns that they have out there,\u2019\u201d Grant said.<\/p>\n

Kleinman submitted comments this time around and said he helped 35 of his neighbors write in as well. The City of Phoenix Aviation Department also weighed in, filing an 18-page letter opposing the plan<\/a> citing noise impacts and called supporting documents \u201cunnecessarily confusing and, in some cases, misleading.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think 2014 Brent is screaming in the back of my ear, \u2018Don\u2019t trust them,\u2019\u201d Kleinman said. \u201cWhen the FAA came out and said, \u2018Well, of course we\u2019re going to do this.\u2019 You can\u2019t take that and a dollar and buy anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kleinman said he wants the FAA to be specific about what the changes would mean for neighborhoods like his.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a fight for specificity, in all honesty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The FAA said it hopes to roll out the new flight paths by June 2027, although they didn\u2019t not respond to Arizona\u2019s Family when asked how many comments were received through the process or what the contents of those comments were.<\/p>\n
