Chicago White Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth laced a liner to the left field wall.<\/p>\n

Down a run with two outs in the seventh inning, Colson Montgomery attempted to score from first base. New York Yankees left fielder Max Schuemann made a one-hop throw to shortstop Anthony Volpe, who threw out Montgomery at the plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were two outs, we all know (Justin Jirschele), I think he\u2019s one of the best third-base coaches \u2014 he gets really good reads,\u201d Montgomery said. \u201cI feel like I got a pretty good jump off it. Lefty (Brent Headrick) on the mound, I felt I couldn\u2019t really get too far off first base. I thought I got a pretty good jump and I thought I was going to score. They\u2019re good players, too, and made decent relays.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Yankees added some breathing room with four runs in the eighth, featuring a three-run home run by Ali S\u00e1nchez, and defeated the Sox 9-5 in front of 22,357 at Rate Field on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Sox saw an early three-run lead evaporate on the way to dropping the opener of the four-game series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just one of those teams that are really good, they are a veteran team,\u201d Montgomery said of the Yankees. \u201cThey are not going to go away. We got up 3-0, I wouldn\u2019t say we got complacent or anything like that. You know they are going to stay on the gas pedal.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the loss, the Sox (55-50) hold a two-game lead in the American League Central ahead of Cleveland (54-53). The Guardians\u2019 game against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday was postponed because of poor weather.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s Sox-Yankees game began after a 20-minute delay following lengthy periods of rain earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

The Sox were sharp out of the gate, pushing across the three runs in the first inning.<\/p>\n

Colson Montgomery had an RBI single, Chase Meidroth collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly and Braden Montgomery drove in a run with a triple, giving the team a 3-0 lead. Colson Montgomery \u2014 who was the designated hitter after fouling a ball off near his right shin Saturday and missing Sunday\u2019s game against the Houston Astros \u2014 successfully scored from first on Braden Montgomery\u2019s triple.<\/p>\n

The Yankees took advantage of consecutive walks at the beginning of a four-run fourth inning. A run scored on a Volpe grounder. That was the last batter for Sox starter Noah Schultz, who allowed three runs on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 3 1\/3 innings.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was in a really good spot there,\u201d manager Will Venable said. \u201cThe first three innings, all the strikeouts were full counts \u2014 where they were really working him, and then there in the fourth, just a bunch of traffic. Thought it was time to move on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Venable thought Monday \u201cwas a step forward for Noah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally good there for the three innings, and maybe he gets through that there in the fourth if I leave him in there,\u201d Venable said. \u201cBut I thought he did a nice job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schultz said of the outing: \u201cFeel like we had a good game plan going into it. (Catcher Edgar Quero<\/a>) called a great game. Feel like we were on the same page most of the time. Was really good early in the game and felt gassed out in the fourth a little bit. It\u2019s unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the pitching change, Jazz Chisholm Jr. drove in two with a double against reliever Chris Murphy to tie the score. Chisholm scored later in the inning on a grounder, giving the Yankees a 4-3 lead.<\/p>\n

The Sox tied the score with an RBI single by Colson Montgomery in the fifth. He had three singles in the game.<\/p>\n

The Yankees went back ahead in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Ben Rice against reliever Bryan Hudson on a 1-2 pitch.<\/p>\n

The Sox attempted to even the score in the bottom of the seventh, but Colson Montgomery was out at the plate on Volpe\u2019s relay throw.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a good aggressive send with two outs,\u201d Venable said. \u201cI think Colson was moving really well the first few bases there, and then just ran out of gas.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Jirschele) is aggressive over there. We love the aggressiveness, and that was just a case where it didn\u2019t work out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reliever Sean Newcomb surrendered the four runs in the eighth. The three-run home run by S\u00e1nchez, the first of his major-league career, extended the Yankees\u2019 lead to 9-4.<\/p>\n

The Sox were charged with three errors in the game, one coming in the eighth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a sloppy game defensively, even in some plays that didn\u2019t end in errors,\u201d Venable said. \u201cJust not sharp there. I thought really impacted the game, obviously, and really was the difference there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volpe dropped Colson Montgomery\u2019s popup to shallow center field with two outs in the ninth, allowing a run to score. But David Bednar struck out Meidroth with two on to end the game.<\/p>\n

\u201c(The Yankees) are a really talented team and they are not going to give up and it\u2019s what we have learned when we play really good teams and older teams,\u201d Colson Montgomery said. \u201cThat\u2019s also a learning experience going into August and September.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chicago White Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth laced a liner to the left field wall.
